Postgraduate research programmes open day

Reading Time: 2 minutes

As your final year is underway, there will probably be some thoughts as to what comes next. If you are already considering Postgraduate study or even want to start exploring it as an option, why not start with the University’s Postgraduate Research open day on the 25th October.

Studying for a postgraduate research degree allows you to deepen your understanding and demonstrate intellectual independence in a research area of your choice. Some programmes may involve a taught element, or specific training in research skills; others may focus on interdisciplinary research, or involve a research partnership with another institution or external organisation.

The most common research degree (a PhD) consists of three or more years of independent research on an original topic culminating in the submission of a thesis.  There are other programmes including professional doctorates and also MPhil courses.

Although entry onto a Postgraduate Research course generally requires a Masters qualification, if you are already thinking about a Research degree it’s worth exploring whether you can go straight from your undergraduate studies or if not, to understand what you will need to pursue a PhD in the future.   Applying for programmes and especially funding can be complicated, so it’s good to know what’s in store!

Whatever your subject or particular area of interest, the open day will give you insight into the broad range of postgraduate research opportunities we have and enable you to make the best choice for you.

University staff and current postgraduate students will be on hand throughout the day to give you information about the admissions process, funding arrangements and the support available to you as a postgraduate research student at The University of Manchester.

A full open day programme will be uploaded to the postgraduate open day webpages in mid-October and a copy will be sent via e-mail to all registered attendees. Register for event to make sure you receive yours.

Please note: this event will just cover Research programmes. If you are considering a Master’s course the University will be holding a separate open day on Wednesday 22nd November. Further details are available here .  If you’re still exploring your options there’s no reason you can’t attend both to get a clear understanding of the full range of postgraduate study open to you!
