With a new semester looming, there’s plenty of interesting events, worthwhile opportunities and fun things to do – as well as some which may just challenge you. Whether you’re looking to get involved with societies or even run as an Exec Officer at the SU, or perhaps you fancy volunteering abroad or winning the prestigious Volunteer of the Year Award – there’s plenty to sink your teeth into this semester. And with that in mind, here are just a few things on the horizon for what will be an exciting few months.
Refreshers 2018, 27 January – 3 February
From 27 January – 3 February, the Students’ Union will bring you the ultimate way to celebrate the end of semester one with Refreshers. With a bunch of fun activities from ‘Reclaim the Night’ and a ‘Friends’ quiz, to roller discos and conversation corners – you’ll be sure to find something to go to. As well as these fun events, there will also be a Refreshers Fair on 30 January where you can sign-up to societies and grab some freebies, plus a Part-Time Jobs Fair on 31 January for anyone looking to earn some extra money.
STAND to be an Exec Officer
Are you passionate about improving student life in Manchester? Do you think you can represent students and make a real change on campus or know someone who could? If so, why not put yourself forward to be part of the Exec Officer team at the Students’ Union? It’s your chance to work for the largest Students’ Union in the UK and develop your skill, while being an impressive first step on the career ladder. The closing date for applications is Friday 16 February, so STAND now!
Do you want to volunteer internationally and would you love the chance to lead a team in another country? If so, have you thought about applying for Team Uganda (Summer 2018)? As part of the University’s commitment to providing meaningful volunteering opportunities and promoting social responsibility overseas we are running Team Uganda, our international volunteering project exclusively for University of Manchester students – at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. It’s a truly fantastic project to be part of and helps to make a difference to others.
The first information session for Team Uganda and other international volunteering opportunities, takes place on Tuesday 6 February – with several others happening at other times. For more information on the sessions and volunteering opportunities, visit the website.
Volunteer of the Year Awards 2018
In just a few weeks, the annual Volunteer of the Year awards launches which aim to recognise and celebrate the volunteering achievements across the University. So if you’ve volunteered your time and made a difference to others either locally or internationally (or know someone who has), keep your eyes peeled for this amazing event. In the meantime, check out some of the inspiring winners from last year.
National Student Survey
Help prospective students make the right choices by giving your honest feedback about your student experience. The National Student Survey will launch on 29 January and it will be your chance to help someone with one of the biggest choices of their life. Further details will be announced soon.
My Future Fest – Tuesday 6 February
On Tuesday 6 February, the My Future Fest will return to campus with lots of opportunities to inspire you to make the most of your time at Manchester and to help you create your future. Start the second semester as you mean to go on by visiting the event where you can explore volunteering and further study opportunities, as well as learning how to create an awesome CV and ace your interviews. There will also be lots of external organisations and exhibitors in attendance including Camp America, National Citizen Service, CRCC Asia and FindAUniversity – as well as many more.
Join the Purple Wave
On Sunday 28 May 2017, over 2400 University of Manchester staff, students and alumni entered the Great Manchester 10K run and made history by running together in our very own #PurpleWave. Fancy joining the Purple Wave this year?
Student Volunteering Week – Big Action Day
Wednesday 21 February sees the return of the Big Action Day where we’ll be transforming spaces across Fallowfield and Withington. If you’re interested in making a difference to the community and environment as well as developing your team working and practical skills, why not come along with your course or housemates?
National Student Money Week 2018
The National Student Money week will take place from 12 – 18 February and across campus there will be a whole range of events from accommodation advice surgeries, to one-off lunch discounts and swap shops, to help you make the most of your money this semester. Further details about the events will be available soon, so keep your eyes open for some money-savvy tips!
