Staying in Manchester over the summer? Whether you’re staying to study, for a summer job, or because you want to experience Manchester in the sunnier months – here’s a list of what’s open (and closed) on campus over the summer.
The main library will be open from 8am to 7pm Monday to Fridays (except August Monday bank holiday weekend), and 9am – 5pm on a Saturday, until 14 September 2018.
The Alan Gilbert Learning Commons 24/7 opening finishes on Friday 8 June at 9pm, and slightly shorter hours will occur over the summer;
- Saturday 9 July to Tuesday 31 July: 9am – 9pm Monday to Friday, and 9am – 5pm during the weekends.
- Wednesday 1 August to Friday 14 September: 9am – midnight Monday – Sunday.
A list of opening dates for other libraries and computer clusters throughout the campus is available on the Libraries website. You could take the advantage of the quieter summer months to discover some new revision spots across campus.
If you’d like a more relaxed environment to catch up on some reading or your work, the Atrium on the first floor University Place will be open from 10am-4pm over the vacation period (excluding holidays). Student support and Careers Service will also be open during this time.
If you feel like you’d need some support and advice on issues affecting your student life, the Student Support hot line (0161 275 3033/3781) will be open during the break from 10-4pm on weekdays.
The Counselling Service offers one to one appointments with a counsellor if you need someone to speak to about whatever is causing you difficulty. This will be available as always from 9am – 4pm, Monday to Friday excluding bank holidays. Check their website for more information or phone them on 0161 275 2864.
Food on Campus
Looking for a bite to eat? Some of the cafes and restaurants around campus will be operating shorter opening hours or closing for the summer months. You can find their summer opening hours on their website. Here are some of the cafe’s open during the break:
- Greenhouse (George Kenyon Hall) : 8am-3pm
- MBS East Costa (AMBS) : 8am-3pm
- Vasaio (Simon Building) : 8am-3pm
- Cafe North (Barnes Wallis Hub) : 9am-3pm
During the summer break the IT Services Support Centre will remain open as usual. Telephone support line and Knowledge Base are open throughout the break, 24 hours a day.

The Students’ Union will be open 8am – 6.30pm Monday – Fridays (when there are no world cup games and gigs) and closed Sundays.
If you’re interested in the football the SU will be open on match days approximately an hour before the game and will close an hour after the last game. Fancy catching some music, the SU will be open on Saturday’s from 5pm when there is a gig scheduled.
