Six top tips to get started with the Library

Welcome to the University of Manchester Library! So you think we’re just about books? Think again. Our mission is to help you to have the best possible learning experience while at university.

We know libraries may not be your priority right now. We understand. Here are some top tips to help you discover the services we offer and how you can access them, all in your own time.

1.Don’t forget your ID card

Pick up your student ID card as soon as you can – it’s also your Library card. You’ll need it to access Library buildings, borrow books, print documents and book study spaces.

2. Explore our different sites

The Library consists of the Main Library, the Alan Gilbert Learning Commons, and nine site libraries, so there’s plenty to explore. Try to visit your subject’s site library within your first few weeks at university – it’ll save you hours of searching for that key resource later on. If you can get to the Main Library on Friday 20 September from 10am you’ll be able to pick up a free textbook as part of our Textbook rescue scheme. Or from Monday 23 September they’ll be at site libraries across campus while stocks last.

3. Learn how to find and borrow books

Once you’ve got your reading list, you’re good to go! Try using Library Search on our website to find the resources you need. If you’ve got an Android device, download our CheckOut app and issue books directly from your phone.

You can manage your loans and requests easily online by logging into your Library account via MyManchester.

4. Get technical

Find the IT support desks in the Main Library and Alan Gilbert Learning Commons to get help with anything technical, including connecting to WiFi, printing and scanning documents and finding a PC at any Library site.

5. Connect with us on social media

Make sure to follow us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram to hear about the latest Library news and events.

6. Ask us for help!

If you’re not sure how to do something, just ask a member of staff – our purple shirts mean we’re easy to spot. We love answering questions, and we’re here to help! Alternatively, you can talk with us online via our instant messaging service, Library Chat.
