Careers Future

Not interested in a graduate job following graduation? No problem!

Reading Time: 2 minutes

We’re well into the final year and you’ve (hopefully) been starting to think about your future following graduation. You may have been attending some Careers Fairs and events but are thinking that going straight into a graduate job just isn’t for you.

If you are wondering what other options there are following graduation why not attend one of our Careers Fairs this week that focus on further study?

Many Manchester graduates go into further study following graduation, and it’s just as much a viable option as going straight into employment. In fact just under a quarter (24.2%)* of Manchester graduates in 2017 went into further study.

There are varieties of reasons graduates go onto to do further study. You many need and extra qualification to help get into your chosen career – such as a Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) to work in the legal sector, or a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) for teaching. Alternatively, many undergraduates continue in academia as they love their subject and want to continue researching in this field.

Even if you’ve been to one of our Open Days, the Fairs coming up this week will give you the opportunity to find out more about further study in it’s broadest sense, what courses are available nationally (and possibly internationally) and how the application process differs from that of applying for a job.

If you are specifically interested in the legal sector come along to the Law Fair on Tuesday to speak to exhibitors who are offering the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) and find out more about the legal sector. The Law Fair isn’t just for students studying a law degree, but for anyone interested in the profession.

If you are thinking more broadly about continuing your studies, come along to the Postgraduate Fair on Wednesday. There you can find out about the postgraduate courses available and meet with a variety of institutions based here in the UK and abroad, with several European institutions attending. There will also be a talk’s programme at the fair covering funding further study.

So if a graduate job isn’t for you, head along to Manchester Central on either Tuesday or Wednesday this week to find out more about further study.
