Undertaking work experience can allow you to develop soft skills such as teamwork and commercial awareness, provide you with the knowledge and experience needed to preform confidently in interviews, and can even lead to full-time graduate role or longer internships.
As well as internships and placements, work experience includes career-related volunteering and short-term work shadowing.
So, what happens if you find a work experience opportunity but you’re struggling to fund it? Panic not, as the work experience bursary scheme for 2018/19 is now open.
The Work Experience Bursary Scheme can support the cost of your work experience activities. It is open to all current full-time undergraduate students.
Depending on your circumstances, you can apply for up to £1000 to help towards the costs of travel, accommodation and/or dependent care costs incurred whilst undertaking the work experience.
Izzy, a 2nd year Fashion Buying and Merchandising student, used her bursary to fund travel costs to and from London, where she had been offered some work experience.
“I was lucky enough to be able to get offered work experience at two highly respectable fashion companies. This was an amazing opportunity for me to gain an insight into the buying industry and help me build up my CV for the future. Knowing I was able to get help from the Work Experience Bursary I was able to fund travel to and from London which can be very expensive! This experience is incredibly valuable to me and am so grateful for being able to undertake it!”
