As the new academic year is now fully underway, there’s no doubt that the adverts for careers related events have already been appearing across campus. Even though you’ve just started your master’s and you may think its too earlier to go along to these events, next year will be here before you know it. So it’s best to start early when it comes to preparing for your future.
Whether you’re still thinking about potential career pathways or you’re actively looking for vacancies, this semester is the perfect time to get insight into different sectors and industries out there, and what’s available to postgraduate students.
During October our Careers fairs will be packed out with a range of exhibitors and organisations on hand to give you any of the information you need to take the next step in thinking about your career.
The Little Careers Fair – Tuesday 1 October, held in the Students’ Union is a smaller scale fair that hosts a combination of big brand name employers, charities and organisations that don’t have a big recruitment schemes.
The Law Fair – Tuesday 8 October, Manchester Central. Held in the city centre this fair is for all students who are considering a career in the legal sector. And it’s not just for students who are studying Law or Criminology. The fair will also have exhibitors who offer Law conversion courses, and training opportunities.
Thee Big Careers Fair – Wednesday 9 & Thursday 10 October, Manchester Central. Day 1 will focus on engineering, science, and technology whilst Day 2 will focus on consultancy, HR, retail management, finance, marketing, and more. A lot of employers open applications for their competitive programmes and graduate schemes early (some might already be open) so attending these fairs is the best way to get a head start when it comes to thinking about what employers are looking for, and what the application process entails. Companies will usually send recent graduates to represent them at Careers Fairs, and so it’s the perfect place to get first-hand insight into the roles on offer and the application process. Be sure to ask lots of questions – they’re the best people to get the answers from!
Postgraduate Research Open Day – Wednesday 23 October, University of Manchester. If you’re thinking about staying in academia, and have fallen in love with Manchester already (who wouldn’t), head along to our PGR Open Day to find out more about PhD courses available.
To find out more about the Fairs, and what exhibitors will be attending each fair visit the Careers Service website. You can also register to attend the fairs beforehand to skip the queues on the day. Or to find out more about other support for master’s students visit the Postgraduate pages on the Careers website.
