So, joining the Athletics Union or a sports team during Welcome wasn’t really for you? Remember there are lots of other ways you can fit some exercise in around your studies on (or close to) campus.
Sporticipate is a great way to try something new for free! All sessions are aimed at complete beginners and all are run either on campus, at one of the Sports facilities or in halls (but these are still open to everyone).
There’s a whole range of sports and classes on offer for you to get involved with. From something you might have played years ago and want to take up again like cricket or netball, to more obscure sports such as Ultimate Frisbee and even quidditch. Sport not your thing? Why not try a fitness class such as Gym Fit, HIIT or brush off your dancing shoes and join a street dance class?
Be Active Classes
These are run on campus by UoM Sport, they’re paid for 8-week classes that usually run in the morning, around lunchtimes and in the evenings. They’re a great way to commit to something – as you pay upfront, which let’s face it, is usually a big incentive to actually go! As with Sporticipate they welcome all levels of ability and there’s a great range! This semester’s classes have just started, but as long as there’s room you can still join (with prices adjusted on a pro rata basis)
With the Armitage Sports Centre, Sugden Sports Centre, and Manchester Aquatics Centre located so conveniently to campus and university accommodation they could be your way to stay active. Don’t forget that all first years in halls have free silver membership of the Armitage centre for this semester. And even if that’s not you, you can check out the facilities and see what’s on offer. You can pay as you go for most activities at all the centres if you just want to check them out.
And if you are regretting not signing up for a team…
Don’t worry, it’s not a Welcome week-only thing, you can join anytime. Take a look at what’s on offer.
