Virtual Purple Wave – can we make it around the world?

Reading Time: 2 minutes

We usually turn the start line of the Manchester 10k into a sea of purple with the University’s purple wave. Unable to do it this year, we thought we’d try and spread it across the globe – albeit virtually!

The Purple Wave started as our mass entry in the city’s annual 10K run, and has grown to incorporate university-organised smaller runs to help people train or start their running journey. Although this year’s run has sadly been cancelled, we still wanted to celebrate our massive purple wave community – and maybe even grow it! So we’re inviting all students, staff, alumni, offer holders and members of our wider community to join the first ever Virtual Purple Wave on Sunday, 6 September.

We’re hoping you will join our challenge to complete a virtual lap around the world by running, walking or jogging – wherever in the world you are!

Take part in a way that suits you (and maybe your friends and family) by taking on a distance of 2.5k, 5k, 10k or a half marathon. And, if you want to take the opportunity to fundraise, our chosen cause is  Re-write Cancer, a University project that aims to build a world-leading cancer research centre, right here in Manchester.

Re-write Cancer is more important now than ever. As a result of the coronavirus pandemic, both cancer research and cancer services have been significantly disrupted. But cancer won’t stop for the virus, and so we won’t either. There’s no requirement to fundraise, and there’s no minimum target if you want to – every penny counts.

Whether you chose to fund raise or not, all we really ask is that you wear as much purple as possible on the big day and share your pictures on social – let’s create a huge splash of Manchester purple all across the world.

Sign up now to join us!
