As part of the plans to safely reopen campus, the Library will begin providing some limited in-person services from 27th July. Below is an outline of what will initially be available:
Borrow books held in Main Library through the Click and Collect service
You will be able to use our Click and Collect service for books held at Main Library. Log in to Library Search and locate the book you want. Then click the ‘Available for request’ button which will appear for books held at Main Library.
Once you have requested a book, you will receive an email notification when the book is ready for collection. You will be able to collect your book between 10am and 2pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
Return books to Main Library
From 27 July, you will be able to return all Library books to the book return bin in the entrance of the Main Library. The building will be open for book returns between 10am and 2pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Please allow 72 hours for your Library account to be updated showing the return.
However, if you’re coming back to the University in the new academic year or you live locally, please hold on to your loans as this will support us to deliver this service to those who urgently need it. Don’t worry – you won’t accrue any fines.
Book a socially distanced study space at the Alan Gilbert Learning Commons
From 27 July, there will be 18 bookable study spaces available for use on the first floor of the Alan Gilbert Learning Commons. You’ll be able to plug in a personal laptop, or use one of the PCs provided.
In addition, there will be one accessible study space available to book. Initially, we’re prioritising these spaces for postgraduate students, who are working on dissertations and coursework.
Study spaces are available Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and slots last from 10am to 2pm. You must book a whole slot online in advance.
Accessing Special Collections
We will also be providing limited access to the Special Collections held at The John Rylands Library for University of Manchester staff and students, prioritising those with external funding and approaching deadlines.
Special Collections items must be viewed in the Modern Reading Room at The John Rylands Library.
There are three bookable spaces available on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, between 10:30am and 3:30pm.
All services have been adapted to ensure safety, which means there will be some changes from what you’re used to. Please read the full details on the Library’s Service Availability webpage before using them.
