Careers Future

What’s on in Future Fortnight?

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Future Fortnight is a programme of online careers support running from 19-30 October 2020, and is open to all students and recent graduates! Whether you’re looking for placement opportunities, graduate roles, or you’re unsure what you’d like to do once you finish university, there will be something for everyone across the two weeks of events.

Week 1 (19-23 October)

The first week of Future Fortnight will focus on exploration – considering your skills and interests, thinking about how they match to different sectors, and researching different roles within those industries. In this first week, you’ll have the opportunity to attend a range of events that’ll help you to plan for the future.

If you’re interested in applying for graduate schemes, make sure you don’t miss the ‘Meet the Professionals: Graduate Schemes‘ event on Wednesday 21 October (from 5:30 – 7pm) and the ‘Meet the employers: Graduate Schemes‘ event on Friday 23 October (from 12:30 – 2pm). You’ll get the chance to speak to Manchester graduates who are currently on a range of different schemes, as well as the employers of some of the large graduate schemes, so that you can ask them about the application process, assessment centres, and what they’re looking for in new graduate hires. Many employers open applications for their competitive programmes and schemes early, and so attending these events is the best way to network and get a head start when it comes to thinking about what employers are looking for, and what the application process entails.

If you’re unsure of what path you’d like to go down after you graduate, there are plenty of resources designed to help you decide, such as the Careers Service’s guide to how to identify your strengths and the Prospects Career Planner questionnaire.

Week 2 (26 – 30 October)

The second week of Future Fortnight will concentrate on taking action – building your network, finding opportunities and perfecting your application and interview technique.

During this week, you’ll be able to attend events that will help you with searching for jobs, such as the Finding Graduate Jobs and Find a Placement events on Monday 26 October.

There will also be support available for the practical elements of job applications, including help with Interview Preparation and Technique, and advice on Psychometric Tests and Situational Judgement Tests. The sessions will include Q&As and guidance for job applications, interviews, and tests – many graduate and placement employers use these tests as part of their selection processes, so it’s important to make sure that you’re as prepared as you can be.
