We have lots of exciting activities planned this week! Whether you’re a new or returning student there’s a whole range of things happening to help you meet new people, explore the campus (or see what might have changed), and find out how you can make the most of Manchester.

Monday 20
9.00am – 7.30pm: Get Started with the Library (Ground Floor main Library)
Beginning today (but running until Friday 8 October), you can stop by the Main Library to visit the Get Started space which explains how to find and borrow resources, where to study, how to use Library PCs, how to print, scan and copy and how to access training skills and support.
10.30am – 4.00pm: Start of Year Fair (huts outside University Place)
There’s plenty of help and support on offer during your studies – it’s just knowing where to find it. Today, representative from Careers, IT Services, the Library, Sport, Stellify, Students’ Union and Media Services will be at the huts outside University Place.
10am – 4pm: Freshers Fair (Manchester Academy)
Organised by the Students’ Union, this is your chance to grab some freebies and meet new people.
5.00pm – 6.30pm: Gary Younge Distinguished Lecture Black Lives Matter: Movement or Moment? Symbol or Substance? (University Place)
If you haven’t been able to register to attend the event you can join online as Gary’s lecture will be live streamed on The University of Manchester YouTube channel.
5.00pm – 7.00pm: Teatime with the International Society (Students’ Union)
All this week you can head to Nest in the SU to enjoy traditional English tea with the International Society. This is the perfect event to meet new people and help make Manchester feel like home. Register here.
Tuesday 21
10.30am – 4.00pm: Start of Year Fair (huts outside University Place)

11.30am – 2.30pm: Levy Food Market (Bridgeford Street)
On Tuesday, the popular Levy Market will be returning on Humanities Bridgeford Street. Come along and enjoy the very best of Manchester’s street food, produce, coffee and confections.
5.00pm-6.30pm: Professor Danielle George, MBE Distinguished Lecture Engineering Difference Markers: past, present, and future (University Place)

6.30pm – 9.00pm: Outdoor Cinema (Gilbert Square)
Sit back, relax and enjoy our outdoor cinema. On Tuesday we’ll be showing The Imitation Game in honour of Manchester alumni Benedict Cumberbatch and Alan Turing, celebrated wartime code-breaker and father of modern computing who worked at Manchester University.
Wednesday 22
10.00am – 4.00pm: SU Societies and Sports Fair (Manchester Academy)
This is your chance to meet and sign up to the Campaigning & Political, Volunteering & Fundraising, Sports, Recreation and AU Clubs and Societies.
10.30am – 4.30pm Wellfest (huts outside University Place)
Join the Student Wellbeing Team for a day of wellbeing activities at WellFest. Take a break in the chill-out zone at the stretch tent on Gilbert Lawn, get involved in activities such as art and movement for wellbeing, meet other students and grab a free cup of tea. You’ll be able to find out more about the University’s Six Ways to Wellbeing; Give, Connect, Learn and Discover, Take Notice, Be Healthy and Be Active.
6.30pm – 9.00pm: Outdoor Cinema (Gilbert Square)
Sit back, relax and enjoy our outdoor cinema. On Wednesday we’ll be showing Black Panther for lovers of all things action and adventure. Make sure to wrap up warm; if you haven’t already noticed, Mancunian weather is extremely unpredictable!
Thursday 23
10.00am – 4.00pm: SU Societies Fair (Manchester Academy)
This is your chance to meet and sign up to the Academic, Arts, Media, Culture and Faith societies.
10.30am – 4.00pm: Start of Year Fair (huts outside University Place)
The Start of Year Fair is back outside University place with representatives from Manchester Student Homes, University Security, Occupational Health, The Veg People, the Sustainability Team, GMP and GM Fire and Rescue Service.
11am – 3pm: Think, draw, do! (MECD)
If you haven’t been along to our Engineering Building – MECD (Manchester Engineering Campus Development) head over today to witness an exciting art intervention by artist Leanne Van come to life.
5.00pm – 6.30pm: Dr Tony Redmond Distinguished Lecture Manchester on the front line in war, disease, and disaster (University Place)
Our final Distinguished Lecture of Welcome takes place this evening. If you haven’t been able to register to attend the event you can join online as the lecture will be live streamed on The University of Manchester YouTube channel.
6.30pm – 9.00pm: Outdoor Cinema (Gilbert Square)
Sit back, relax and enjoy our outdoor cinema. On Thursday we’re showing The Greatest Showman – come and join in the singing!
Friday 24
We’ve got a quieter day today as there’s been so much packed in this week. If you didn’t manage to book onto a campus tour, why not use today to do a self-guided tour of campus or look at the other tours in the ‘virtual tour experiences’ in the app.
11.00am – 1.00pm: Postgraduate Networking Event (The Whitworth Art Gallery)
A chance to meet and connect with other postgrad students in the beautiful surroundings of the iconic Whitworth Art Gallery. Make new friends whilst browsing the impressive collection of art and design works – what better way to spend your Friday morning.
