5k and 2.5k fun run at Platt Fields

Reading Time: 2 minutes

On Wednesday 9 March, the University is hosting a 2.5km and 5km fun run event at Platt Fields.

All our students and staff are welcome to take part, whether it’s your first organised run or you’re a seasoned veteran. You can run, jog or walk the course – whatever suits you. Why not sign up with your friends or housemates for moral support, or perhaps friendly competition!

How to take part

There will be three runs on 9 March: 5k at 12.20pm; 2.5k at 1.30pm; and another 5k at 2.15pm. Entry is £3, or £8 including a running t-shirt.

You can find out more and register on the University Sport website.

This event is part of the Purple Wave, an annual tradition where our University community comes together to run, have fun and raise money for charity. The name comes from our distinctive purple running t-shirts.

This is the Purple Wave’s first in-person event after the disruption of COVID, and we’re really looking forward to seeing everyone.

This event is hosted in partnership with the Great Run Company, who run large sport events across the UK.

Great Manchester Run

If you’re up for a bigger challenge, the Purple Wave will also take part in the Great Manchester Run on Sunday 22 May.

You can sign up for either a 10k or a marathon, and we’ll pay your registration fee if you fundraise for our chosen charity Re-write Cancer. Find out more on the University Sport website.

Not a runner? Try volunteering

If you’re not a runner, we’re looking for volunteers for the events on 9 March and 22 May.

There are a few different roles, such as handing out t-shirts and finishers badges, marshalling the route, helping at the University Sport marquee or doing general tasks to keep the events running smoothly.

This is a great way to soak up the unique Purple Wave atmosphere and help us fundraise for good causes – and you’ll get a free t-shirt.

Find out more about volunteering here – if you’re interested you can also drop in to one of our information sessions in the Alan Gilbert Learning Commons:

  • Tuesday 22 – Friday 25 February, 11am-1pm
  • Tuesday 1 – Friday 4 March, 11am-1pm

If you have any questions about taking part or volunteering at either of these events, you can email
