With spooky season right around the corner we wanted to remind you of how to celebrate the right way this Halloween.
Remember your neighbours
One of the things we love most about Manchester is the diversity of our wider community and how students and residents live side-by-side. Did you know that 66% of residents in Fallowfield, and 79% of households in Withington aren’t students? With this in mind we want to encourage you to be mindful this Halloween and remember your young and older neighbours when you’re out late or celebrating!
Small gestures can go a long way. If you’re having a party, why not let them know in advance when it will start and end so they can let you know any problems this might cause? And keep them in mind if you’re coming back from a night out so you don’t wake them up.
Be mindful of children
When out and about, please remember that Halloween is also a celebration for smaller children. Although smaller children might be dressed to scare in their costumes, they might in fact be a little scared of you! Please act respectfully when out of the house.
Look after yourself and your mates
Like with any night out we encourage you to look after each other. Before you head out make sure your phone is fully charged and think about sharing your location with your friends on WhatsApp or Snapchat so you can find each other again if you get seperated.
If you plan on drinking or taking drugs this Halloween then take five minutes to read our guide on how to keep yourself safe.
Download SafeZone
Alongside looking after each other, download SafeZone to keep yourself safe this Winter. SafeZone is our safety and wellbeing app, designed to give you extra peace of mind on campuses across the city or living in accommodation. The SafeZone app is free to download and easy to use and we recommend that all students have it on their phones. You can use it to:
- ‘Check in’ any time of day – tell us where you are on campus 24/7
- Quickly and discreetly call for assistance – whether it’s for first aid or in an emergency
- Keep up to date – notifications sent directly to your phone if there is an incident on campus
You can use SafeZone to call for help in areas of Fallowfield and Victoria Park, The University of Manchester campus, Manchester Metropolitan University campus and University of Salford campus. Any student can use the SafeZone app to get assistance on any of these campuses – no matter which university you attend.
