No heating or hot water in buildings on the west side of Oxford Road campus

UPDATE: 5pm, 3 November

Following a burst on the main steam line in the AMBS boiler room on Tuesday (1 November) affecting buildings on the west side of our Oxford Road campus, heating and hot water have now been restored in the following buildings:

* Alliance Manchester Business School

* Martin Harris

* Rutherford

* Coupland 1

* Whitworth Art Gallery

* Manchester Museum

We expect to have heating and hot water in the buildings listed below by early tomorrow morning (Friday 4 November):

  • Humanities Bridgeford Street
  • Arthur Lewis
  • Coupland 3             
  • John Owens                      
  • Beyer
  • Whitworth Hall
  • AGLC
  • Samuel Alexander
  • Ellen Wilkinson
  • Christie Building
  • Stephen Joseph
  • Main University Library


UPDATE: 10am, 3 November

There is no heating or hot water in a number of buildings on the west side of Oxford Road.

Due to a burst on the main steam line in the AMBS boiler room on Tuesday (1 November), some of the buildings on the west side of our Oxford Road campus have been left with no heating or hot water.

Currently, heating and hot water have been restored in the following buildings:

  • Alliance Manchester Business School
  • Martin Harris
  • Rutherford
  • Coupland 1
  • Whitworth Art Gallery
  • Manchester Museum

The following buildings currently have no heating or hot water, but work is continuing and we will provide further updates when available:

  • Humanities Bridgeford Street
  • Arthur Lewis
  • Coupland 3             
  • John Owens                      
  • Beyer
  • Whitworth Hall
  • AGLC
  • Samuel Alexander
  • Ellen Wilkinson
  • Christie Building
  • Stephen Joseph

Our Cosy Campus spaces are available for you to use at the following locations:

  • University Place Drum, open 9am-9pm
  • Dover Street Ex Café, open 9am-6pm
  • Dover Street G45, open 9am-6pm
  • MECD Ground Floor, open 9-8pm

We are hoping to be able to restore heat to the majority of buildings by the end of the day.

There is no heating or hot water in the buildings on the west side of Oxford Road this morning  (2 November 2022).

Due to a burst steam valve in the AMBS boiler room yesterday (1 November), there is currently no heating or hot water in the buildings on the west side of our Oxford Road campus.

As an alternative you can use the following Cosy Campus spaces:

University Place Drum, open 9am-9pm

Dover Street Ex Café, open 9am-6pm

Dover Street G45, open 9am-6pm

MECD Ground Floor, open 9-8pm

Work is continuing this morning (Wednesday 2 November) and it is anticipated that the heating and hot water will be back on later today. We will share an update on the repairs as soon as we can. Further updates on the repair will be shared once available.


Please be aware that there is no heating or hot water in the buildings on the west side of Oxford Road today (Tuesday 1 November 2022).

Due to a burst steam valve in the AMBS boiler room, there will be no heating or hot water in the buildings on the west side of Oxford Road campus for the rest of today.

Estates are working to fix the issue so that heating can resume tomorrow, but it may be tomorrow morning before they are able to fully assess the damage and carry out repairs.
