New Year, New me (part 3): Making 2023 happen – Hope Setting

Reading Time: 6 minutes

2023 is here and you want to make it even better than last year. The best way is to figure out some things you want to achieve and set goals. You’ve probably heard about Goal Setting, but if you’re like me, it can be a bit daunting to set goals. Instead, I’ve been Hope Setting, which helped me a lot in 2022.

As the title suggests, this is part 3 of a series of blogs from me. If you missed them, you can take a look at parts 1 and 2 here:

New Year, New me (part 2): Figuring out the toughest question – Who am I?

New Year, New me (part 1): A healthy look at the past year

or join me here and dive right in to Hope setting:

What is Hope Setting? Hope Setting is basically goal setting but less rigid. It involves practising gratitude, grace and hope toward a goal. Whereas goal setting simply is setting a goal and trying to stick to it out of pure motivation and discipline. And truly… discipline is the bane of my existence. I ain’t got none of that! I know a lot of other people complain about being indiscipline. Hope setting is what has helped me to get some of my New Year dreams done.

How to set your hopes.

  1. Make a list of things you would realistically like to achieve this year. That could be, body acceptance, better grades and being calmer for example. Some people create a vision board, but that may be too much for you to do. You can probably make a list of 5 things and stick it to your wall.
  2. Think of a few things you’d like to try, that will aide you in achieving each of those things.
  3. Write the words: Grace, Gratitude and Hope in bold on your wall. These words are important to recenter you when you feel as though you cannot reach your goals.

Grace is giving yourself permission to be imperfect, take things slow and have setbacks. Gratitude is taking time off to be thankful for how far you’ve come, the blessings you’ve received throughout the day and breakthroughs no matter how small. And lastly, Hope, holding unto Hope is essential. It is the reminder that although things are not going your way, everything is seasonal. There will be failure, stagnation and eventually success, especially if efforts are being made to reach where you want to go on your journey this year.

Practising Grace, Gratitude and Hope (GGH) makes achieving your goals not necessarily more likely but rather, it makes achieving your goals less stressful. It changes your perspective on the things you hold dear, lessens anxiety and helps you to feel at peace when setbacks arise.

  • Understand that you may change in the process of practising GGH and your goals may change along with it. While this can be scary, because you may have started the year wanting to be a doctor and then suddenly you realize you’ll be happier as a nail tech or personal trainer, that is sort of the point of Hope Setting. Its lack of rigidity and its focus on practising GGH helps you to discover ideas, dreams and desires you have for yourself that you probably have been suppressing by trying to stick to one thing or struggling to find something to stick too. It is always ok to go a new path. You’ll see what I’m talking about a few weeks into starting this journey of Hope Setting.
  • It is extremely important that before this you recognize that Rome was not built in a day. It will be a process of taking your time and finding peace in taking your time to build and uplift yourself to where you want to go.
  • And finally, do not set time limits. This is why it is less rigid. Set ranges instead, such as, I am giving myself a month to three months to try this.

Here is a fun extra you can try for gratitude, the gratitude jar. Whenever you feel a little down, add something to your jar:

P.S I want to remind you that I am proud of you, even if I don’t know you. It’s going to be a tough year, but I know you’ll make it. I hope when things are tough you are able to show yourself the kindness and love you are worthy of and wherever you are today, there is someone who is on the journey too that believes in you. I’m rooting for you!!! Good luck. Next blog: Techniques to Managing Your New Year Resolutions.
