The Purple Wave is a UoM Sport programme, created to bring people for organised running events – and there’s something for everyone. It’s not about elite performance, but participating with loads of like minded people to have fun and make friends.
All students and staff are welcome to take part, whether it’s your first organised run or you’re a seasoned veteran. You can run, jog or walk the course – whatever suits you. Why not sign up with your friends or housemates for moral support, or perhaps friendly competition!
Take part
Make a start with the 2.5km and 5km events in Platt Fields par on the 1st March:
5k 12:20pm start
2.5k 1:30pm start
5k 2:15pm
Then, If you’re up for a bigger challenge, the Purple Wave will also take part in the Great Manchester Run on Sunday 21st May 2023 when you can choose to run either a 10k or a marathon.

Fundraising
If you choose to fundraise for our chosen charity, Re-Write cancer your Purple Wave registration fee will be waived so long you reach a modest minimum fundraising target of £60 for the 10k and £100 for the half marathon (there’s no minimum fundraising target for the 2.5k or 5k). It’s our way of saying a great big ‘thank you’ for choosing to support Manchester’s cancer research.
Volunteering
We rely on an army of volunteers from across the University to support our events so even if you’re not a runner, you can still get involved!
There are a few different roles, across all events and it’s a great way to soak up the unique Purple Wave atmosphere and help us fundraise for good causes
