Happy Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s Gurpurab!

Dev Ji’s Gurpurab, also know as Guru Nanak Jayanti, is a celebration of the birth of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism and the first of the ten Sikh Gurus.

Sikhs celebrate this day to honour his teachings of equality, compassion, and unity, which continue to inspire millions worldwide. One of Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s most significant contributions was the introduction of Langar, a free community kitchen where everyone, regardless of race or background, is welcome to share a meal. This tradition embodies the Sikh values of selfless service (Seva) and equality.

Today, Langar remains a cornerstone of Sikh practice, with Gurdwaras (Sikh temples) around the world serving free meals to all everyday.

In keeping with this tradition, the Sikh Society will be hosting a Langar on campus in March, offering a chance for the university community to come together, share a meal, and experience the spirit of inclusivity and service that Guru Nanak Dev Ji embodied.
