My advice for navigating uni life as a commuter student

Let’s be real: navigating university life as a commuter student can be tricky at times! From travelling to university, staying on top of assignments as well as making friends and maintaining a social life, there can be a lot to juggle.

As someone who has navigated the early morning hustle and late-night study sessions, here are some of my top tips for thriving at university as a commuter!

  1. Create a Morning Routine that Works for YOU!

My number one piece of advice for students commuting to university would be to create a morning routine! Now this does not have to complicated, as you may often have early starts but practicing a few healthy habits can help keep you energised and feel ready for the day . This will look different from individual to individual, but it can be as simple as ensuring to have a glass of water in the morning, having a good breakfast to fuel you for the day or taking five minutes to stretch in the morning. The important thing is to find something that works for you!

  1. Societies: Your Secret Weapon for Friends & Fun

“But I don’t live on campus, how do I even meet people?” Trust me, I’ve been there. The answer? Join a society (or three!) The university of offers a huge range of societies from academics to sports and so many more, so there is definitely something for everyone and you can find an extensive list of societies on the Student’s Union website. Living off campus sometimes may feel lonely at times, so attending events and socials with people who have similar interests and hobbies presents an amazing opportunity to make friends.

  1. Wind down with a Travel Playlist!

Having a playlist that you love is a great way to help you wind down and relax on a train or bus. It is important to take time for yourself and look after your mental health so listening to a podcast or your favourite song can be an easy and practical way to do this!

  1. Work on Assignments or Reading En-Route

While travelling on buses or trains may seem long, it can be a fantastic time to work on your assignments or get some reading done for a lecture of seminar. Managing your time as a commuter student is so important and studying on your way to university can save you a lot of time! Remember though, after a long day it is also key to make sure that you have some time to recharge and rejuvenate to take care of your wellbeing.

  1. Claim Your Space on Campus

There are so many more students that commute to university than you may initially think. You can join CommuterSoc, which hosts a range of events throughout the year and is a great way to meet fellow commuters – you may even meet someone who travels a similar route to you! The University has also just launched a new Commuter Space in Booth Street East Building with lots of amenities including lockers, microwaves, study spaces and multi-faith rooms for us to use!
