We’d like to think our city and campus are safe spaces for everyone, and we work hard to try and make that the case. However, we do know that opportunistic thefts of phones and personal belongings can and do happen, especially in busy areas.
However, there are simple steps you can take to help keep your phone and other belongings safe. So, whether you’re heading to class, exploring the city, or studying in public spaces, here are some key tips to help protect your valuables.
When you’re out and about
- Stay alert: Avoid walking while using your phone. Looking at your screen can make you less aware of your surroundings and your phone an easy target.
- Keep your phone secure: If you need to use your phone in public, hold it close to you and be mindful of who is around. Try and use hands-free options when you can.
- Zip up your pockets: If you pop your phone (or anything valuable) in a pocket – if you can use one with a zip or an inside one. If that’s not possible think about keeping your hands in there too.
- Use well-lit and busy routes: Stick to main roads and well-populated areas, especially at night.
- Be cautious at road crossings: Thieves on bikes or scooters can snatch phones from people standing near the edge of the pavement. Stay back from the curb while using your phone.
- Don’t leave belongings unattended: If you’re studying in a café, library, or public space, always take your valuables with you if you step away.
- Use security features on devices: Enable tracking apps like Find My iPhone or Find My Device to help locate your phone if it’s lost or stolen.
- Be aware of distractions: Thieves may work in pairs, using one person to create a distraction while another takes your belongings. Keep your items in sight at all times.
- Secure your laptop and bag: Use a laptop lock where possible and ensure your bag is zipped and within reach.
- Register your belongings: You should register your mobile and other property with a serial number on the national property database Immobilise, it’s free to do.
- Know your IMEI number: Make a note of your personal IMEI number (type *#06# on your phone’s keypad to get it). This number cannot be altered or deleted by the thief. If you have the IMEI number you can block your phone being used if it is stolen.
If your belongings are stolen
- Report it immediately: If you see something on campus that you think is suspicious, contact University Security via Safezone or 0161 306 9966 (on the back of your ID card) or Greater Manchester Police on 101. If you’ve just witness an actual crime or have just had something stolen ring the Police on 999.
- Block your phone – If your mobile is stolen, contact your network provider to block the device and prevent unauthorised use.
- Use tracking apps – If you have tracking enabled, try locating your device and share this information with the police.
- Inform your bank – If you’ve lost bank cards or other sensitive items, contact your bank to prevent fraudulent activity.
