Further advice from Manchester Student Homes

There are lots of things to think about when looking at your housing choices for next year – to get you started, here are some of Manchester Student Homes’ top tips:

  • Take your time: Don’t rush into a decision. Research properties, landlords/agents, rental prices, and contracts carefully. Try to view places in person to find the right fit.
  • Choose housemates wisely: You’ll be spending a lot of time together, so make sure you’re on the same page. Agree on things like house rules, cleaning, and how you’ll split bills before signing a contract.
  • View and review properties: All housemates should view the property—ideally in person. If that’s not possible, try to arrange a virtual viewing with a current tenant who can share honest feedback. Download our House Hunting Checklist and take it with you on viewings.
  • Get your contract checked: Once signed, your tenancy agreement is legally binding and hard to cancel. Send it to manchesterstudenthomes@manchester.ac.uk for a free contract check.
  • Make sure your deposit is protected: Landlords must protect your deposit in a government-approved scheme. You should receive details of where it’s held and how to get it back at the end of your tenancy.
