The 26th of November is World Sustainable Transport Day! The transport sector is a huge contributor to carbon emissions globally, which is why how we move matters! To help you travel more sustainably on our campus, here is a brief guide to environmentally conscious commuting.
Cycling is lowest carbon emitting form of transport!
- Biko Bikes are a student led collective based in the Students’ Union Building Basement. They run drop-in sessions for bike repairs and maintenance, offer affordable bike rentals and are entirely volunteer run!
- Starling Bank Bikes are available to rent across Manchester and offer a great sustainable and affordable alternative to driving. Simply rent a bike through the app, which also contains a map of nearby bikes and bays.
Count your steps!
- The Sustainability Champions are organizing a Step Count Competition! From the 1st -5th of December 2025, participants can track their daily steps using any step-tracking app (Suggestions: Apple Health/Strava). Once the week ends, scan the QR code on the poster to upload screenshots showing the total step count for each day. The results will be added to our leaderboard, and the top three walkers will receive:
🥇 £20 voucher
🥈 £10 voucher
🥉 £5 voucher
Submission deadline: 11:59 pm, 5 December 2025.
Replacing car journeys with public transport can help reduce CO2 emissions by 42% if using the bus!
- The 147 bus is free for University of Manchester students from our campus to Piccadilly Train Station if you show the driver your valid student ID.
