Essential maintenance: Nancy Rothwell Building closed 7–9 April

A message from Professor Scott Heath, FSE Vice Dean for Teaching, Learning and Students

Dear students,

I am writing to let you know that we must shut down all power to the Nancy Rothwell Building on Tuesday 7, Wednesday 8 and Thursday 9 April in order to allow essential maintenance work to take place. As a result, the building will be closed for all students and staff on these days. The building will also be closed on Friday, 3 April and Monday, 6 April due to the UK bank holidays.

Why this work is taking place

We have been working with the building’s original contractors to investigate some ongoing issues with electrical supplies in the Nancy Rothwell Building. A solution has been identified but in order to safely carry out the necessary work we will have to isolate the electrical supply.

We have decided to do the work on the 7th, 8th and 9th April to avoid clashes with timetabled teaching and minimise the impact to research activity over the Easter break.

Even so, we recognise that this poses an inconvenience to building users. To minimise this, please do familiarise yourself with the guidance provided below.

Where you can go for wellbeing support and general queries

The Student Support Hub in the Nancy Rothwell Building will be closed, along with the rest of the building. However, the Nancy Rothwell Building Student Support Hub team will be available as normal via email and phone. You can also visit the Student Support Hub team in the Alan Turing Building for in-person support. Contact details for all Student Support Hubs are available on the Student Support website

You can find alternative multi-faith spaces on the University interactive map

Where you can go to use study space or computers

There are alternative study spaces across campus, including the Alan Gilbert Learning Commons and the Main Library. You can find the opening hours for a range of study spaces on the library website. With AppsAnywhere you can also use more than 300 IT-supported software applications in PC clusters across campus.

For students undertaking final year projects, you should plan with your supervisor to ensure you do not need access to the building during this period and, if necessary, make alternative plans for project work. Given that this is the Easter holiday period I really do encourage you to take a break from your studies at this time if that’s possible.

Get in touch

We appreciate this news is less than ideal and thank you for your cooperation in helping us resolve the issue now, minimising the need for further disruption in the future.

If you have any additional queries or concerns regarding this closure, please contact the Student Support Hub team. They can be found on the first floor of the Nancy Rothwell Building or via email at soe.hub@manchester.ac.uk

Best wishes,

Scott
