A big thank you to everyone who cycles to campus. Your journeys help make our campus more sustainable, reduce congestion and improve local air quality.
From time to time, bikes and locks are left behind when they are no longer needed, forgotten at the end of the academic year, or simply reach the end of their useful life. Over time, these unused bikes and locks can take up valuable cycle parking spaces, making it more difficult for others to find secure parking close to where they work or study.
To help keep our cycle facilities safe, accessible and welcoming, we will be carrying out a campus-wide bike and lock sweep over the summer.
What will happen?
- During the week commencing 10 August, bikes and locks that appear to have been left behind will be tagged with a removal notice.
- This will cover all University campus locations, including outdoor cycle parking, cycle shelters, and on-campus roads and streets.
- If your bike or lock has been tagged and you wish to keep it, simply remove the tag before the removal date shown on it.
- After 28 September 2026, any tagged bikes will be removed, and any tagged locks will be cut off.
We’re providing plenty of notice to allow for students returning after the summer break and staff returning from annual leave.
What happens to removed items?
🚲 Bikes will be donated to charity partners wherever possible, so they can be repaired, reused and given a new lease of life.
🔒 Locks, unusable bikes and bike parts will be recycled responsibly as scrap metal.
How you can help
If you have a bike or lock on campus that you no longer need, please take it home, donate it, or check your local authority’s recycling and waste guidance to see what facilities are available in your area.
We also recommend avoiding leaving bikes or locks on campus for extended periods. Not only can this increase the risk of theft or damage, but it also reduces the availability of cycle parking for others.
