Joint Students’ Union and University position on Turnitin

Turnitin, the software used to submit your academic work and check for plagiarism, recently proposed a policy change that would allow them to train AI models using student work.

The Students’ Union emphasised your level of concern about this change and relayed it to University leadership. We heard clearly that this is a subject many of you feel strongly about.

Following significant concern at this and other universities, Turnitin has postponed this change until the 2027/28 academic year. We will be keeping our relationship with them under review ahead of this new date, and we continue to monitor the use of AI by companies that we are contracted to.

We’d like to thank all the students who have contacted us about this matter, and we will keep you updated on developments.
