Staying Safe this Clubbing Season

Whether you are someone who finds themselves clubbing every weekend or just on special occasions it is still so important to understand not only the dangers that come along with night time culture but also ways that you can keep yourself safe to ensure the best night possible. In a vibrant city like Manchester, where the nightlife is diverse and dynamic, staying safe should be a top priority. In this blog, we’ll shed light on some unfortunate risks associated with clubbing and provide essential tips to ensure your night is not only fun but, most importantly, safe.

  1. Friend System: One of the fundamental rules for a safe night out is the buddy system. Ensure that you and your friends are on the same page from the beginning. Arrive together and leave together. Throughout the night, keep track of each other’s whereabouts. Unity is your best defence against potential dangers.
  2. Plan your night in advance: We understand that a night out can easily become spontaneous, however ensuring that everyone has a set plan prior to drinking about how you are getting to and leaving the planned place will prevent any problems. This is especially prevalent if the night out will involve drinking as this typically does not tie in well with creating good plans.
  3. Emergency money: It’s always a good idea to have some money set aside from your typical spending budget in case of emergencies, this can be used for things such as transportation, food and water. It’s a good safety net to have which can also offer some peace of mind in unforeseen circumstances.
  4. Safe Taxi Scheme: If you are ever in need of getting home but you don’t have money, make sure you are aware of the safe taxi scheme put in place by the university to ensure everyone can get home safe.
  5. Secure your belongings : it’s always a good idea to make use of a bag when going clubbing to ensure that your phone, wallet, keys etc are kept in a safe, confined space. If you feel that you will not be able to keep an eye on your belongings then make use of the cloakrooms provided by most clubs throughout Manchester so as to not lose sight of what you need.
  6. Know your limit : it’s within your best interest to understand your alcohol tolerance and be aware of how different drinks may affect you. Pacing yourself throughout the night will prevent excessive drinking which often is more likely to lead to dangerous situations. Make sure you are drinking enough water and taking breaks for fresh air when you feel it is needed.

    • After 12pm the following day, collect your student ID Card from the Students’ Union Helpdesk in exchange for the payment of your fare
  7. Safe Relationships: Importantly if you are planning on engaging in sexual activities, there are certain rules to follow to ensure your safety. Make sure people you trust know where your location, who you are with and when you are planning on getting home (giving a trusted friend your live location is always a good idea). Free contraception is also provided by both the Student Union as well as the Student GP reception which also provides drink covers to combat spiking.
  8. Charge your phone: Ensure your phone is fully charged before heading out for the night so that not only can you contact others but also so that they can contact you. It’s a good idea to have emergency contacts saved as well as easily accessible so that in case of danger you can pick up your phone and call help immediately.
  9. Trust your instinct: If a situation ever feels unsafe or uncomfortable, don’t hesitate to seek help or remove yourself from the environment. Remember that if something doesn’t feel right then the likelihood is that it isn’t, always trust your gut feeling and follow what you believe is right.

In embracing these tips collectively, you not only enhance your safety but also contribute to a culture of responsible clubbing. It’s not just about enjoying the night; it’s about ensuring that every memory created is one filled with positive experiences. By adhering to these guidelines, you empower yourself to make the most of the exciting Manchester nightlife while prioritising your safety and the well-being of those around you. Remember, a safe night out is a memorable one.
