Embracing the Journey: My First Week in Manchester and Tips for New Students

As I approach graduation from the University of Manchester, I find myself reflecting on my first week in this vibrant city. The transition from China to Manchester was a significant change, filled with excitement and a bit of apprehension. I want to share my initial impressions and offer some tips to help new students adapt to their new environment quickly.

My First Week in Manchester

After flying for more than 20 hours from China, I should have been exhausted, but the excitement of my upcoming journey kept me awake. Upon arriving at my accommodation, I finally succumbed to the fatigue and slept for 12 hours straight.

Refreshed and eager to explore, I ventured out to wander around the city. Just ten minutes into my walk, it began to rain. Fortunately, I had heard about Manchester’s unpredictable weather and came prepared with an umbrella. Seeking shelter, I coincidentally entered the Manchester Museum. I was immediately captivated by its grandeur and the wealth of exhibits it housed.

The Manchester Museum is a treasure trove of history and culture. One of the first displays that caught my eye was the impressive collection of Egyptian artefacts, including mummies and ancient relics. The Natural History section, with its vast array of fossils and dinosaur skeletons, transported me back to prehistoric times. I spent hours marvelling at the intricate details of the artefacts and the stories they told. The museum’s emphasis on diversity and inclusivity resonated with me, showcasing artefacts from different cultures and eras. This visit made me appreciate the depth of history and culture that Manchester offers, and I started to fall in love with the city’s unique blend of past and present.

During my first week, I also dived into various Fresher Week activities, which were a fantastic introduction to university life. The university had organised a wide range of events to welcome new students and help them settle in. One of the first activities I attended was the Society Fair. It was bustling with energy, with stalls representing all kinds of student societies or clubs much more than you can ever imagine. I signed up for the Zumba Society, Language Society, International Society, and to be a volunteer in the Make a Smile charity. Each sign-up brought me closer to new friends and exciting opportunities.

My Fresher’s week

Meeting my course leader and classmates was another significant moment. Their warmth and enthusiasm reassured me that I had chosen the right place for my studies. I even managed to secure a part-time job at the university, which not only provided some financial support but also helped me integrate more deeply into campus life.

By the end of the week, I felt a growing sense of belonging. Manchester had quickly become a second home, and I was excited about the academic and personal growth that awaited me.

Tips for New Students

Get to Know the Campus

Spend your first few days exploring the university campus. Familiarise yourself with key locations like the library, student union, and your lecture halls. This will make your first week of classes much less stressful.

Join Student Societies

Engaging in student societies is a great way to meet new people and pursue interests. Whether it’s a cultural group, a sports team, or an academic society, joining these groups can help you build a community and feel more at home.

Utilise University Resources

Take advantage of the resources available to you, such as academic advising, mental health services, and career counselling. These services are designed to support your academic and personal well-being.

Explore the City

Manchester has a rich cultural scene. Visit museums, galleries, and theatres, and don’t miss the local markets. Exploring the city will help you feel more connected to your new home.

Stay Organised

Keep track of important dates and deadlines. Use a planner or digital calendar to manage your schedule and stay on top of your studies.

Make Time for Self-Care

Balancing academics with self-care is crucial. Find activities that help you relax and recharge, whether it’s exercising, reading, or spending time with friends.
