As the lead singer of the Stone Roses famously said, “Manchester has everything but a beach.” While the buzz of the city centre is hard to beat, Greater Manchester has so much more to discover. With its independent cafés and eateries, historic and Tudor-style buildings, and plenty of green spaces and scenic hikes, it’s well worth venturing beyond the city for a change of pace.
Having grown up in Greater Manchester, I’ve put together a few of my favourite suggestions, aiming for spots you might not have come across before.
Monton Village, Salford

One of my favourite places, Monton is a charming, leafy village with a lot to offer. Its quaint Tudor-style buildings and the Bridgewater Canal make it a perfect spot for a leisurely day out. The canal is lined with scenic footpaths, part of the ‘loop line,’ where you can wander through the woods and stroll alongside the water. Maps of the loop line are readily available, so you can tailor your walk to suit your energy levels.
Monton is home to many independent cafes and restaurants. My personal favourites include 6/Cut for pizza or cake, Oats & Honey – a sustainable store and coffee shop, or Vintage Ambience as a top-spot for brunch. The nearest train station is Patricroft, just 15 minutes from Manchester Piccadilly, and there’s plenty of parking if you’re driving.
Entwistle Reservoir, Bolton
Just a 30-minute train ride from Manchester Victoria, Entwistle Reservoir feels worlds away from the city. The picturesque surroundings make it easy to forget you’re still in North Manchester. The walk around the reservoir takes less than an hour, but if you’re up for more, you can extend your journey to the nearby Wayoh Reservoir. Afterwards, you can pop into The Strawbury Duck for a hearty meal or drink.

Prestwich Village, Bury
Easily accessible on the Metrolink, Prestwich has so much to offer. Whether it’s the makers markets throughout the month, independent cafés, wine shops and restaurants, or a visit to the biggest municipal park in Europe (Heaton Park), Prestwich has plenty to explore.
Heaton Park is well-known for hosting concerts and the annual Parklife Festival, but it’s also a fantastic spot for outdoor activities. You can try ziplining or treetop trampolining at ZipWorld, or simply enjoy a wander through the park’s beautiful grounds. It’s the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation.
Altrincham, Trafford
Known as the modern market town, Altrincham is also home to many well-known figures. One of its main attractions is the famous Altrincham Market. Under the same ownership as Mackie Mayor in the city-centre, the market extends into other stalls including beautiful flower shops and zero-waste stores. It also has great shopping and a thriving café culture, making it ideal for a relaxed day out.
Rivington Pike, Bolton

A little further afield, about a 40-minute drive from central Manchester, Rivington Pike is absolutely worth the trip. In the middle of the countryside, you can take in the panoramic views with a hike up Rivington Pike, challenge yourself at Go Ape, or take a more relaxed stroll around the reservoir. When it’s time for a break, there are two barns serving food and drink, as well as quant tearooms and welcoming pubs. Keep an eye out for events being held there too such as charity hikes, Ironman Triathlon, or festive light shows.
Next time you’re at a loose end and feel like you’ve seen everything Manchester has to offer, branch out and try somewhere new. Greater Manchester is full of hidden gems right on the doorstep, and you might just discover a new favourite place.
