As the days get longer (and hopefully brighter) more of you might think about cycling to campus – which is great for your health, budget and the environment.
And, keeping your bike safely locked up on campus has never been easier. Did you know that you can get hold of a gold standard D safety lock for just £15? These locks are much more effective at protecting your bike from theft than a standard chain lock which thieves can easily cut through.
University Bike Lock Scheme
To get your hands on a subsidised D lock, all you need to do is register your bike by completing the form on the campus support and security website, order (and pay for) your lock and then attend one of the bike marking sessions run by our Campus Support and Security team where you’ll be able to collect your lock.
Not only will you have a great bike lock, but your bike will be registered with BikeRegister, the national cycle database.

Tips for getting the most out of cycling
Cycling can be a great way of getting around Manchester, but it’s important you know how to keep yourself ( as well as your bike) safe. Here are some resources and tips:
- Follow the highway code: Know your rights and responsibilities as a cyclist.
- Be visible: Wear bright, reflective clothing and ensure your bike lights are functioning, especially as nights grow darker. Use a correctly fitted helmet that meets regulations.
- Check out the cycle routes available in the city and throughout Greater Manchester if you want to explore further.
- Take a look at Biko Bikes: This student-led project provides affordable bike rentals and maintenance lessons. Beryl Bikes are also available at Bee Network Cycle Hire stations.
