Study like you: Which revision spot fits your vibe

The summer exam season is creeping up fast, and for many of us, that means it’s time to swap Netflix marathons for lecture notes. However it’s important to remember that it isn’t just about what you study, it’s also about where you study. And luckily, being at the largest single-site university in the UK means we’ve got no shortage of options… if you know where to look.

Sure, revising in bed sounds like a good idea- until you wake up three hours later with highlighter on your pillow and no memory of the past page. So, if you’re ready to ditch the duvet and find a spot that actually works for you, here’s a breakdown of the best revision spots on campus, each tailored to suit your personality and study style.

The Main Library (the all-rounder)

If you want a guaranteed productive day, the Main Library is the safest bet. With colour-coded zones ranging from absolute silence to group chatter, there’s something for every study style. Whether you’re tackling a solo essay or need to book a group study room for a group cram session, it’s all covered. Plus, there’s a café downstairs for your much-needed caffeine fix. Reliable, versatile, and no-nonsense.

The Alan Gilbert Learning Commons (the last minute hustler)

Open 24/7 and fuelled by vending machines, Alan Gilbert is the go-to for anyone who just found out the deadline is… tomorrow. It’s a quiet, focused space ideal for powering through an all-nighter, but be warned, the intensity is real. The atmosphere leans intense, making it a great fit for students who thrive with structure and minimal distractions.

Fallowfield Community Library (the excuse maker)

It’s okay to admit, when you’re dreading a long revision day even the bus ride to campus can feel like too much. That’s where Fallowfield Community Library comes in. Tucked away just a short walk from Squirrels Bar (which, let’s be honest, probably inspires fewer excuses to avoid), it’s ideal for anyone in Fallowfield who’s prone to the classic “I’ll go after lunch” line. It’s low-key, quiet, and best of all – close.

John Rylands Library (the social media specialist)

If you’re looking for a study spot that doubles as an Instagram story, John Rylands is your place. With its grand, gothic architecture and peaceful reading rooms, it’s perfect for those romanticising revision. It’s not the most practical for group work or snacks, but if your study style thrives on vibes and a touch of drama, this iconic spot ticks every box. (I’d only recommend for students who are comfortable working in silence, or else you may face the wrath of angry stares!)

Whitworth Café (the aesthetic academist)

Tucked away in the heart of campus, Whitworth Café is a true hidden gem. It blends the scenic beauty of John Rylands with the flexibility of the Main Library, making it perfect for low-key students who work best with a bit of background buzz. Surrounded by greenery and natural light, it’s ideal for those who are comfortable with both quieter and busier vibes.

The Student Union (the sociable studier)

Often overlooked, the SU is actually one of the most relaxed and versatile study spots on campus. With plenty of comfy seating, affordable food and coffee options, and a laid-back atmosphere, it’s perfect for students who like to mix work with a bit of social energy. And once the grind is over? Why not head to Bar 532 to celebrate a well-spent productive day.

Manchester Art Gallery/ HOME Manchester (the unconventional revisionist)

Sometimes traditional study spots just won’t cut it, and that’s where spots like Manchester Art Gallery or HOME come in. Quirky, creative, and far from your typical study setup, they’re ideal for students who need a change of scenery. When the flashcards get too much, take a breather and wander through the exhibits to experience revision with a side of inspiration. Just try not to get too entranced by the beautiful art and shows and forget why you went in the first place (a crime I may have committed more than once).
