What’s on in October

October brings a mix of cosy autumn vibes and exciting events across the city. From Halloween nights and autumn festivals to big gigs and cultural highlights, there’s something for every mood and interest. We’ve put together a guide to help you embrace the season, explore Manchester, and make the most of everything on offer this month. 

The Whitworth presents this month Yuki Kihara’s Paradise Camp, a visually stunning exhibition exploring Indigenous and queer worlds through photography, film, and archives. The project reimagines Gauguin’s famous Pacific paintings reclaiming stories often erased by colonialism. Free to visit, this is a thought-provoking mix of art, history, and powerful storytelling. 

Mid-Autumn Festival celebration at the Manchester Museum (5th) 

Celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival at Manchester Museum with lanterns, stories, and traditional activities. It’s a chance to enjoy Chinese culture, try mooncakes, and soak up a warm community vibe right on campus. Free entry makes it a perfect weekend activity with friends. 

Steins, bratwurst, and oompah bands, Manchester Oktoberfest is back. Expect big tents, live music, flowing beer, and a lot of Bavarian vibes, perfect for a fun night with friends. Tickets are affordable, and it’s one of the best ways to get a little taste of Munich without leaving Manchester. 

“Your Manchester” showcased at Main Library (Throughout October) 

A brand new exhibition celebrating the University’s heritage and archives is now open. Explore unique items on display at Blue Ground, Main Library. Join special Collections Special encounters on 6 & 10 October to meet the curator and see originals up close. Entry is completely free! 

Gigs and Live Events 

Rising fast with viral songs on TikTok and fresh from a BRIT nomination, Lola Young one of the UK’s most exciting new voices. With raw lyrics, a powerhouse voice, and the kind of stage presence that makes you remember her, her Manchester shows promise big energy and unforgettable vibes. 

Hundreds of Beavers + Q&A (6th)

Catch the cult film Hundreds of Beavers at HOME in Manchester, followed by a live Q&A with the lead actor Ryland Brickson Cole Tews. Expect whimsical mischief and unexpected nods to arcade classics in this one of a kind comedy night. Come for the stories and behind the scenes chats.

brew. haha (8th) 

Join a night of queer stand up, storytelling, and bold laughs at this unapologetically funny comedy event. Headed by Morgan Rees with a line-up of LGBTQ+ talent. Hosted in Manchester’s vibrant comedy scene, expect great energy, big laughs, and a crowd that’s here to celebrate.

The Warehouse Project (September to December) 

One of the most iconic nightlife events in Manchester is still going in October. The Warehouse Project kicks off the season with incredible lineups. Everything techno, house, drum & bass, and more. The events are held at the renowned Depot Mayfield; it’s an unforgettable night out for music lovers. 

Sports & Community 

Northern Snow (4th & 5th)  

The UK’s only snow sport show on real snow is back in Manchester! After bringing over 6,000 visitors last year, Northern Snow returns for a weekend filled with gear demos, pro sessions, and more. Whether you’re a seasonal rider or just curious to try something new, this event has it all.  Watch the pros up the slope or simply enjoy the winter atmosphere with friends. The best part? Entry is completely free. 

This is the biggest match of the month. The rivalry is big, the energy unmatched, and the energy takes over the whole city. Pubs will be packed, screens everywhere, and it’s the perfect excuse to grab your mates for a pint. Even if you’re not a big fan, the atmosphere alone makes it worth doing something during the day. Some places to watch include the Courtyard, Turing Tap or Box for cheap drinks deals. 

Manchester transforms into the spooky vibe with giant inflatable monsters spread around the city centre, stilt walkers, and the Walk the Plan monster procession this season. Perfect for wandering around with friends, enjoying street performances, and getting into the Halloween vibes. Free and full of surprises around every corner of town! 

South Manchester ParkRun (Every Saturday)  

Saturday reset? Parkrun is a free and friendly 5k takes place every single week at Platt Fields Park. It doesn’t matter if you’re a runner, walker, or just there for the vibes, it is a great way to start your day and meet people. No pressure or entry ticket, just sign up whenever you feel like it.  

The Maker’s Market showcases a blend of local artists, performers, and small businesses in lively monthly markets. It’s the perfect spot for a weekend stroll, with everything from handmade crafts and baked goods to unique gifts. Locations change every week, think Salford Quays, Ancoats, and Didsbury, so check their website for upcoming dates! 

Low-cost activities! 

Autumn is the perfect time for a stroll through Heaton Park, one of Manchester’s biggest green spaces. Walk through golden leaves, breathe in fresh air, and spot the local Highland cows resting peacefully. It’s a free, wholesome escape from the city chaos. Bring a flask of coffee and make it a cosy afternoon for yourself or with friends. 

Step into the stunning halls of the John Rylands Library and lose yourself in history. Just recently, it has been named one of the UK’s favourite’s literary landmarks, and October’s quiet afternoons are perfect for exploring its collection of rare books and manuscripts. it’s a calm, free way to spend a rainy day. 

Just a short train ride away, Hebden Bridge is a charming Yorkshire town made for autumn exploring. Wander through quirky shops, sip coffee in cosy coffee shops, and admire the canals decorated with lovely autumn colours. It’s a great short escape from Manchester, perfect for a relaxed weekend adventure.
