We’re lucky that there are so many options for getting around Manchester – whether it’s for your commute into lectures or a trip into the city centre. We want you to stay safe no matter how you choose to get around. From understanding different types of taxis to keeping your bike in working order, here’s what you need to know.
Public transport (buses, trains and trams)
When traveling late, always check the last transport times and inform someone of your route. Keep your ticket or change handy, and ensure your valuables are secure. Here are some tips:
📑 Plan ahead: Use Transport for Greater Manchester’s journey planner for the best routes. Students can get discounted Unirider tickets for Stagecoach and Magic buses, and the 147 bus is free between Piccadilly Station and campus. See the route map for more information.
🚍 Know your exits: Familiarize yourself with the nearest exits and alarms on public transport.
👁️ Stay visible: Avoid empty carriages on trains or trams. Sit downstairs or near the driver on buses, especially at night, and wait in well-lit areas with others nearby. Keep your belongings close with you and in sight.
👀 Be observant: If you feel uncomfortable, move away. Report suspicious behaviour to staff. For incidents on buses and trams, contact GMP via LiveChat or call 101. For trains, notify staff or contact British Transport Police at 0800 40 50 40 or text 61016.
Taxis
If you’re getting a taxi or Uber in the city, there’s a few things you can do to make sure you’re safe:
🚕 Use licensed vehicles: Check for a registered licence ID on the vehicle.
📞 Have a local firm’s number: Keep a local taxi firm number handy or use a reliable app like Uber. Confirm the driver’s identity before getting in.
Cycling
Cycling is a great way to navigate Manchester, with dedicated lanes throughout the city. Keep the following in mind:
🚫 Don’t wear headphones: Make sure you’re always fully aware of what’s going on around you.
👍 Follow the highway code: Know your rights and responsibilities as a cyclist.
🦺 Be visible: Wear bright, reflective clothing and ensure your bike lights are functioning, especially as nights grow darker. Use a correctly fitted helmet that meets regulations.
🔒 Secure Your bike: The University offers subsidised gold-standard ‘D’ locks for £15 at bike marking sessions. Find out when the next one is.
🚲 Explore Biko Bikes: This student-led project provides affordable bike rentals and maintenance lessons. Beryl Bikes are also available at Bee Network Cycle Hire stations.
