Staying in Manchester over the holidays can be amazing. The city slows down and there are still plenty of cheap or free things happening. Whether you’re international, local, or spending your first holiday away from your home, or you’ve done it before, here are some easy ideas to keep you social and festive during the holidays!
What’s on across the city
Manchester Christmas Markets
Walk through stalls, try festive snacks or hot chocolate, and enjoy the lights around the city centre. The markets run from November 7 to December 22, with Albert Square and Cathedral Gardens extending until January 4, 2026, so even after Christmas you can still enjoy activities like Skate Manchester’s ice rink at Cathedral Gardens!
Cottonopolis: The Origins of Global Manchester
Explore the roots of Manchester’s global identity through its cotton industry in this new exhibition at The John Rylands Library throughout December. Cottonopolis uncovers the city’s industrial past and its worldwide connections. The exhibition is free and perfect for a thoughtful afternoon indoors.
Blackpool Illuminations Trip – Students’ Union Event
Experience one of the UK’s most iconic winter light festivals with the SU’s special evening trip to the Blackpool Illuminations on the 14th of December, a 6-mile-long light show. Expect laser projections, interactive installations, illuminated trams, and over one million bulbs. This annual event only runs for a limited time, so don’t miss your chance to see it!
If you want a Christmas dinner out…
Some restaurants in Manchester do offer special Christmas Eve dinners, even if they’re closed on Christmas Day. This can be a lovely treat if you’re here with friends and don’t want to cook, but it’s important to book in advance, as places tend to fill up quickly and many require bookings on the 24th.

Christmas Movie Night – Hulme Hall (free!)
Friday, 19 Dec, 7.30 – 9.30pm :30 (Hulme Hall, Oxford Pl). If you’re based in or near Hulme, this is the perfect way to get into the Christmas spirit without spending money. Expect a familiar festive favourite and a relaxed vibe, ideal if you’re looking for something social and simple.

Festive Decoration Evening – SLEMS and Canterbury Court (free!)
Saturday, 20 December, 17:00–19:00 (SLEMS reception). A chilled creative evening making your own festive decorations while chatting, sipping something warm, and easing into Christmas weekend. No crafting experience is needed at all, just come along, get cosy, and maybe make something you can display in halls.

Hatha Yoga – Fallowfield Residents (free!)
Monday 22 December, 6pm – 7pm (Uttley Study Room 3). Take a peaceful hour to stretch, breathe and unwind after a busy term. It’s a calm and gentle way to start the holiday week, especially if you’re staying in Fallowfield and want to keep yourself feeling grounded. Wear comfy clothes and bring some water.

Church community events
Churches across Manchester are open throughout the Christmas period and have community events from film screenings to shared meals and dedicated meet ups for international students and member of the LGBT+IA community.
Low-cost cosy activities to make the holidays feel special
Board game night
Find a cheap game, or borrow from a friend, literally the best way to spend quiet evenings.
DIY hot chocolate night
Cocoa powder, milk, marshmallows. If you are feeling fancier, you can use a chocolate bar, it’s cheap, easy and delicious. Or you can drop by Whittard in the Exchange Square and try their free tasters if in town!
Cook a festive pot-luck
Everyone brings one dish, cheap for everyone, and you get variety. If you and your friends are from different places you can make a very international Christmas dinner and explore different traditions from around the world!
Explore Christmas lights and decorations
Wander around Didsbury, Chorlton or King Street, people decorate houses and shops and it’s always nice to get into the festive spirit.
Baking with friends
Buy ingredients together, divide the cost and bake Christmas cookies, brownies or cinnamon rolls. It fills the flat with that festive smell everyone loves, feels very homely, and you get to enjoy a nice treat after.
Festive movie marathon

Christmas Eve/Christmas Day park walk
Most things shut down those days, but that’s the perfect time to walk your local park when it’s quiet and to stay active. Whether it’s Platt Fields Park in Fallowfield, Whitworth Park, Fletcher Moss Botanical Gardens or the closest one to you, bundle up, grab a coffee, and take pictures, it’s very peaceful. If you’re feeling far from home…
Many international and local students stay in Manchester over the Christmas break, so don’t be shy about inviting someone for a walk, a film, or dinner. People really appreciate having company over the holidays, even if it’s just for an evening of tea and biscuits. A gentle reminder that you’re not alone spending Christmas in Manchester. The city can feel calm, peaceful and honestly beautiful in winter, embrace the slow days, make yourself cosy, and create your own new traditions.
Remember though if you are feeling isolated or in need of support, there is lots support available throughout the festive period.
