The University has published an updated Acceptable Use Policy for IT Facilities and Services. The revised policy reflects how digital technologies are now used across teaching, research and student life, while continuing to support academic freedom and freedom of speech.
What’s new?
The updated policy:
- Clarifies expectations for the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), including generative AI, linking to existing University guidance and technical security standards.
- Explicitly reinforces academic freedom and freedom of speech, confirming that acceptable use controls will not be applied in a way that restricts lawful teaching, research or debate.
- Strengthens guidance on data protection and information security, reflecting current legal and regulatory requirements.
- Modernises language and structure to make roles, responsibilities and expectations clearer.
What does this mean for you?
For most students, this update reflects good practice already in place. The policy provides clearer reassurance around responsible and proportionate use of University IT systems, secure handling of personal and confidential information, and appropriate use of AI tools in your studies and research.
What do you need to do?
Students are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the updated policy and continue following our existing AI usage guidelines.
