Quiet spaces and shared study etiquette in the Library

Quiet spaces in the Library

Quiet spaces in the Library

Everyone likes to study differently, so it’s good to know that if you’re looking for a calm place to focus, the University Library has a range of quieter study spaces across campus and here’s where to find them:

In Main Library, the Muriel Stott Building, Red 2 and Purple 4 are good options for individual study.

Beyond Main Library, there are quieter study options at other Library sites too. The study spaces towards the Oxford Road end of the building in the Alan Gilbert Learning Commons (AGLC) are usually quieter than those closer to Gilbert Square.

There is also a Zzz Zone on floor 2 where you can recharge and enjoy a 20-minute power nap in the Pod! The Art and Archaeology Library in the Mansfield Cooper Building is also often highlighted as a calm space to work.

To help everyone study comfortably, please be mindful that these are shared spaces. Keeping noise low, using headphones for audio and being considerate when moving around the building all help maintain a calm atmosphere. Noise levels can sometimes increase when people are packing up or walking through study areas, so taking a little extra care at these times can make a big difference for those still working.

Clean, tidy and calm

No matter where you choose to study – please remember to be considerate and ensure our study spaces remain pleasant for everyone.

Although food and drink are allowed in parts of the Library, please keep study spaces tidy, dispose of rubbish properly and report any mess to Library staff so it can be cleaned quickly. If you’re planning to eat a meal or take a longer break, the Library Living Room and Cosy Campus spaces are good places to recharge before heading back to study.

And remember, if the area you’re working in becomes disruptive, you can speak to a member of Library staff at a helpdesk who will be happy to provide you with support.
