With the January exam season coming to an end, it’s time to prepare for a familiar yet unique challenge – reintegrating into regular life at university. Semester 2 awaits, offering a fresh start and new opportunities. However, navigating this transition can prove to be more demanding than it appears.
Firstly, it’s typical to require more time to readjust to a routine in Semester 2 that was once second nature. Life at home and at university are two very different scenarios. In this way, spending time with your loved ones, relaxing and recuperating can sometimes make the transition back to university feel quite abrupt or unnatural. Particularly if this is your first university exam season or if you didn’t have any need to return to campus until the very end of January, the start of Semester 2 will not feel the same as Semester 1.
So, make sure to allow yourself the opportunity to settle back into a routine or create a new one. Your university schedule might have stayed the same or completely changed. You might have less or more contact hours than last semester, with your balance of commitments outside of your degree different too. The best way to build a schedule is to work your routine around anything set in stone, like your university classes but also other commitments like sports training or work shifts. At university, it’s hard to wake up and go to bed at the same times each day, so having a sense of routine in other parts of your schedule can help counteract this.
Try to re-familiarise with your environment. Simple things like doing a big top-up food shop, heading back to campus before classes start or just going on a walk near to where you live can help readjust your mind and body. For some, jumping straight back into everything can make the transition more challenging.
A sense of organisation can also contribute to feeling settled. Whether that’s writing down upcoming deadlines, creating a new folder system for organising your notes or starting on pre-reading – these little tasks can help ease the jump when the first week of lectures and classes begin.
Some people find setting goals helpful to readjust. Whilst the New Year isn’t the only time to set goals, the combination of a new year and new semester can help increase motivation to stick to them. It could be trying to wake up at the same time each morning, trying to keep one day free of university work a week or making more of a conscious effort to see friends as three examples. Setting goals can help you look forward on the next few months at university and kick start the semester on a positive note.
The start of Semester 2 is another chance to explore new opportunities – it’s never too late to pick something new up! The sports and societies fairs are held again so definitely pop along if you’re interested in joining something new. Once again, there are opportunities to volunteer, which counts towards the University’s Stellify Award. And if you didn’t get a chance to check in with the Careers Service in Semester 1, there’s still a chance to do so too. Whether you want guidance on crafting the perfect cover letter and CV or need a little help focusing your attention onto a specific industry or career – they’re here to help.
Many assessment methods stay the same in Semester 2 which can provide a good opportunity to learn from what you may have succeeded in or need. Take the time to look through feedback you might have received to understand what lead the marker to make that decision. And then try to consciously implement these pieces of feedback in your next pieces of work.
As you settle back into university life following the Christmas break, remember that this semester holds lots of new opportunities for learning and growth. Whilst we’re halfway through the academic year, there’s still plenty of time to shape new habits and routines, try something new or re-kindle an old passion.
