Future Investment in Computation at the University
A business case is being planned to obtain major investment by the University in computational resources/platforms for research and teaching. Prof Caroline Jay, in her role as in her role as lead of the Research Lifecycle Programme and the Research Infrastructure Sub Committee, would like to gather the views of the research community on this topic through a short survey. All responses are welcome including those from researchers who do not currently use centralised University compute resources. The closing date for the survey is the 31st of August 2025.

They can help with everything from using or installing research software, running or creating your own code, research data storage advice and much more. No appointment required!
Our sessions are now monthly over the summer: 10th Sept – 2-3pm.
Reminder – we’re Now on BlueSky!
It’s great to see more and more researchers and research groups from across the University joining BlueSky. We’re also on there so come and join us! There’s even a UoM starter pack to get you going.
Computation and Data in Research
If you’re not one of the 1200 UoM researchers who are members of CaDiR then why not join today? It’s an umbrella space for a wide range of special interest and user groups bringing together researchers from right across the University.
The groups hold meetings and can give support on a wide range of topics including research software, a range of programming languages, electronic research notebooks, UK Biobank and more!
General Updates
Free online training in research coding skills – the CodeRefinery team are running an online open course on best practices in Research Software Development! It runs on 9, 10, 11 September and then every Wednesday lunchtime for 6 weeks.
Full details in the General channel!
Electronic Research Notebooks
The group have posted updates on forthcoming user trials and the roll out of an ERN service.
R User Group
Meet Martin Herrerias Azcue, Research Software Engineer in Research IT and one of the leads of the R User Group at The University of Manchester (R.U.M.).
Join the R Coding Adventure!
Take part in a series of weekly challenges as part of a story-driven R tutorial. Take on the role of a data detective — cleaning corrupted datasets and uncovering hidden clues from a mysterious experiment. Suitable for everyone including R beginners!
Research Data Stewardship Community
They are asking the community what activity they would like to see over the next academic year when the group reconvenes in October. There are some prompts on the channel to get you thinking so head over and share your thoughts!
