Sikhs celebrate Bandi Chor Divas to commemorate the release of Guru Hargobind Ji, the sixth Sikh Guru, who was freed from imprisonment by the Mughal emperor in 1619.
Guru Hargobind Ji’s release was not just about his own freedom; he also secured the liberation of 52 Hindu kings who were unjustly held captive. This day symbolises justice, freedom, and the Sikh values of compassion and equality.
Sikhs mark the occasion with celebrations that include lighting Gurdwaras (Sikh temples) with candles and lamps, performing Kirtan (devotional singing), sharing meals, and engaging in acts of Seva (selfless service) to support the community.
Celebrating Bandi Chor Divas isn’t just about remembering the past; it’s about living those values through acts of Seva today. Come along for a special Gurudwara visit with the Manchester Sikh Society on Tuesday, 21 October, 6PM at Guru Nanak Dev Ji Gurudwara, Monton Street. Meet at University Place at 5:30 PM.
Bring your Divas and feel free to wear your traditional attire to celebrate this joyous occasion! 🪔💛
