October marks Black History Month (BHM) in the UK, a time to honour the deep history, culture, and contributions of Black people in the UK and across the world. At The University of Manchester, this month provides an opportunity to celebrate Black excellence in our community, amplify their voices, and reflect on how we can all contribute to this celebration all year round.
Recognising Black Excellence and Resilience
Throughout the month, the University has highlighted the achievements of Black staff, students, and alumni through events, discussions, and creative initiatives.
🎧 Podcast Launch: Let’s Talk Race
- Following the success of Let’s Talk Disability, the University has launched a new podcast series: Let’s Talk Race. The first episode explores why conversations about race and racism can be challenging, pulling on events in Manchester and across the UK.
- This panel includes President and Vice Chancellor Duncan Ivison, and Professor Dawn Edge, the first Black woman Professor at Manchester.

🗣️ Courage, Vision, Planning and Fearless Work: The Congress Lives On
- A conversation with journalist, author, and Professor of Sociology Gary Younge, reflecting on Black histories and the legacy of the Pan African Congress. Sign up here!

🎬 The Success of Moss Side – Film Screening
- A documentary by Director Elmi Ali and Producer Baka Bah, challenging misconceptions about Moss Side. Showcases stories of resilience, from a football coach inspiring young children’s dreams, to a mother turning grief into activism. Sign up here!

Spotlight on Manchester 10/10
If you haven’t heard of Manchester 10/10, this programme is dedicated to uplifting and empowering Black Heritage students through mentorship, networking, and celebration. This Instagram video offers a great overview of one of their many events and how to get involved.
Designed in partnership with Black heritage students, their events support students to build their peer, professional and academic networks and develop the confidence to engage with all that the Manchester student experience has to offer.
Student voices
Black Girls Space, a student led society, continues to create safe and empowering spaces for Black women that study at the university. They recently shared a heartfelt video reflecting on BHM!
Continuing the Conversation
Black History Month may come to an end, but the University’s commitment to celebrating and supporting Black voices continues all year round. Whether through mentorship programmes or community events, there are countless ways to stay engaged and keep the spirit of BHM alive after October ends.
