Flu and flu-like illnesses are continuing to increase nationally, with current levels classified as medium, but showing an upward trend.
Students are encouraged to take sensible precautions and follow NHS guidance to help protect themselves and others during this season.
Flu is highly infectious, particularly in the first five days, and spreads easily through coughs, sneezes, and contaminated surfaces. However, if you are ill, there are easy ways you can reduce the risk of transmission:
- wash your hands regularly
- cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or your elbow
- dispose of tissues promptly
- stay at home if you have a high temperature or feel unwell.
NHS Greater Manchester also advises keeping cold and flu medicines at home, ventilating indoor spaces, avoiding visits to vulnerable people when ill, considering face masks if symptomatic, and getting winter vaccines if eligible.
If you are feeling unwell with flu or anything else, make sure you know which NHS service is the right one to use. It could be your GP, Pharmacy, 111 or Urgent Care – the 111 symptom checker can advise you which service is most appropriate.
