Local elections are taking place across England on Thursday, 7 May 2026. This is your chance to have a say on who represents your local area on the council.
If you’re planning to vote, there are a few key things you need to do in advance.
You must be registered to vote to take part in the elections.
Registering online is quick and usually takes around five minutes. You’ll need your National Insurance number.
The deadline to register to vote is Friday, 20 April 2026 (11:59pm).
What are local elections?
Local elections decide who represents your area on the local council. Councillors make decisions on things that affect your day-to-day life, such as housing, transport, local services and waste collection.
Can I register at more than one address?
If you’re a student, you can usually register at both your home and term-time addresses for local elections. You may be able to vote in both locations if they are in different council areas, but you can only vote once in each area.
How do I check if I’m registered?
If you’re unsure whether you’re registered, you’ll need to contact your local council. They manage the electoral register and can confirm your details.
If you’ve recently moved, you’ll need to register again.
Where do I vote?
You must vote at your allocated polling station, which is based on the address you’re registered at.
You’ll receive a poll card in the post before election day with details of where to go.
What happens on polling day?
Polling stations are open from 7am to 10pm.
When you arrive, staff will:
- Check your name on the electoral register
- Ask to see your photo ID
- Give you a ballot paper
- Direct you to a private booth to cast your vote
Staff are there to help, and private areas are available if you’d prefer to show your ID discreetly.
Do I need photo ID?
Yes, you’ll need to bring an accepted form of photo ID to vote in person.
This can include:
- Passport
- Driving licence
- PASS card
- Blue Badge
- Disabled person’s bus pass
Expired ID is usually accepted if the photo still looks like you.
If you don’t have valid ID, you can apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate. The deadline to apply is 5pm on Tuesday, 28 April 2026.
