Issues with access to multiple IT systems – resolved

Colleagues in IT Services are investigating issues with access to multiple services. Students and colleagues may be unable to sign into various services.

This is under investigation as a matter of priority, and we will post updates as soon as we have more information.

Update 5 – resolved (3.10pm, Wednesday 30 September)

After further investigation, monitoring and discussion with people who reported access issues, we believe that the earlier remediation work has resolved the problem.

Our colleagues and students should no longer experience issues when accessing University services from off-campus.

In the meantime, anyone experiencing any IT issues should contact the IT Support Centre.

Update 4 (1pm, Wednesday 30 September)

We have been advised that a change has been made and initial investigations show that service quality appears to be improving, however we will continue to monitor closely. We have removed Jisc’s advice for customers of Virgin Media to get in touch with them, and have edited our previous messages where possible to reflect this new information.

Update 3 (9am, Wednesday 30 September)

Jisc, the provider of network services to UK higher education institutions, have issued guidance to people from all institutions affected by the ongoing connectivity issues.

Investigation has confirmed that the fault exists beyond Jisc’s network and appears to be affecting customers of Virgin Media, attempting to access services at UK Higher Education institutions, including The University of Manchester.

Update 2 (16:50pm, Tuesday 29 September)

We are continuing to investigate this as a matter of priority.

IT Services continue to work with the University’s network provider on resolving the access issues experienced by some colleagues and students. We will issue further information by 9am on Wednesday 30 September.

Update 1 (2.10pm, Tuesday 29 September)

Further investigation has shown that many people experiencing these issues accessing University services are using the same internet service provider from home. While IT Services continue to investigate, you may find that a suitable workaround is to use a Wi-Fi hotspot on your phone instead.

However, note that doing this will use your phone’s data allowance; only do this if you have sufficient allowance on your mobile contract.
