5 services every Manchester student should know about

You might never need them all, but knowing where to find support can make a huge difference if things don’t go to plan.

Whether you need help with your wellbeing, finances, safety or studies, these are five services every Manchester student should know about.

Report and Support

If you’ve experienced or witnessed bullying, harassment, discrimination, gender-based violence, hate, micro-aggressions or have a safeguarding concern, Report and Support can help.

You can report anonymously or get support from a trained advisor, who can help you understand your options and access the support available to you.

Did you know:
Never OK is a joint campaign between The University of Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Salford that promotes a culture where harassment, violence and hate are never tolerated.

The campaign encourages all students to be active bystanders, challenge unacceptable behaviour and seek support when they need it.

SafeZone

SafeZone is the University’s free safety app, designed to help keep you safe and give you extra peace of mind on campus.

The app can be used to get assistance when you feel unsafe, access first aid and wellbeing support, receive campus notifications, and check in when studying or working alone.

Did you know:

SafeZone works across The University of Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Salford campuses.

You can also use the app to check in when studying or working alone, so it’s easier to get help if you need it.

Mental Health Support

If you’re struggling with your mental health, support is available through the University’s Mental Health Support Team.

You can request an appointment, access counselling, attend groups and workshops, explore self-help resources, and find information on getting urgent help. Students can also access 24-hour support through Spectrum.Life.

Did you know:
Mental health support isn’t just counselling. You can also access social prescribing, which can help you meet new people, explore hobbies and activities, improve your work-life balance, and feel more connected to university life.

Essentials

Essentials is run by your Students’ Union and is here to help all students meet their basic needs.

The service offers support with accessing essential items, including food, clothing, cleaning products, personal hygiene products and childcare items. You’ll also find budgeting support, a community space and signposting to other services that may be able to help.

Did you know:
On the Students’ Union events page, you can filter by ‘Essentials’ to see all of the regular workshops and activities available, covering topics such as budgeting, cooking, wellbeing and other practical skills.

Student Support Hubs

Not sure where to start? Visit your Student Support Hub.

Located across campus, the Hubs provide help and guidance on a wide range of issues. Whether you need wellbeing support, careers advice or help with course information, the team can point you in the right direction.

Did you know:
You don’t have to visit the Hub in your School. There are Student Support Hubs across campus, and you can access the same University support services from any of them, making it easier to get help wherever you are.

Hopefully, you won’t need all of these services during your time at Manchester. But if you do need support, knowing where to find it can help you get the right advice more quickly.

If the service you’re looking for isn’t listed here, there’s lots more support available to you throughout your studies, and you can find all support available on our Student Support website.
