What’s on in October

We hope you’ve settled into Manchester life! There’s always something interesting happening in this city, so keep reading to find our top picks this month…

Art & Culture

Day trip to Caernarfon & Penrhyn Castle (5th)

Take a trip to a beautiful medieval castle in the north of Wales. Set on the Menai Straits, with a backdrop of the Snowdonia summits, the day will be a great experience with tickets available to reserve now.

Manchester Oktoberfest (10th)

Visit Platt Fields Park as it’s transformed into an authentic German beer and food festival. With pints all the way from a brewery in Bavaria, it’s certain you’ll not sit for long before you want to sing along and stand on the long benches!

Songs for the Storm to Come (12th)

This immersive sound and multi-screen installation is an emotive work developed with a local choir on the way humans relate and interact with the changing environment. Focusing on the role communal sound plays in expressing this relationship, the exhibition is open all month at HOME.

Unboxing Anthony Burgess (15th)

Most famous as the author of A Clockwork Orange, this free gathering at his literary archive in the city, will explore the life and works of this hugely prolific author, composer, journalist and playwright.

Gigs & Live Events

Neighbourhood Festival (5th)

Indie head? Find Pale Waves, The Royston Club, Corella and a host of other great bands playing in the City Centre this Saturday.

The Last Dinner Party (11th)

Winners of the BRIT Rising Star Award & BBC Radio 1 Sound of 2024, the London quintet find themselves at the O2 Victoria Warehouse in support of their debut album, Prelude To Ecstasy. Maybe these accolades don’t matter, but then again, nothing matters.

Wallows (19th)

You could stay at home and watch the sunset, or you could get yourself to Dylan Minnette’s gig and ask yourself “Are you bored yet?” in the flesh. (It’s a reference guys…the concert won’t be boring)

Drag Comedy Cabaret (26th)

Hosted by the BBC New Comedy Award shortlisted drag queen Lady Bushra, hear about life from a British South Asian perspective with heavy doses of humour!

Lizzy McAlpine (27th)

Tickets are running low for the singer/songwriter’s return to Manchester celebrating her third studio album, Older. Perfect if you need a good cry.

Sports

Super League Grand Final (12th)

The Rugby season comes to its climatic end as all roads lead to Old Trafford. Use your Student Card for discounted tickets and enjoy what’s sure to be a great game with The Lathums performing at half-time.

5-a-side Football Leagues (Every Wednesday)

Grab some mates and sign your team up for the start of the Armitage 5-a-side season. Perfect if you’re a Fallowfield football fan wanting some game time. There’s also pitches on Denmark Road.

Community

Paddington Bear Trail (Early October)

Make sure to pack an emergency marmalade sandwich when you go looking for the Paddington Bear statues dotted around the city this month. Ahead of the film’s release on Nov 8 they’ll be a series of scavenger-style statues to keep an eye out for.

Bee Sanctuary Movement (Every Sunday)

If helping local parks create wildlife friendly spaces is something you’d be interested in, join the volunteering group to get involved in the fantastic work the Bee Sanctuary do. They encourage people of all ages and backgrounds, however small or large your efforts are, they matter!

Halloween on the Farm (Every Saturday)

Finally, what would an October event’s guide be without something Halloween-related? Head down to Lancaster Park & Animal Farm each Saturday from the 5th for pumpkin carving, a haunted house and animal petting.
