What is Research IT?
Whether you’re a new postgraduate researcher or not, it’s worthwhile understanding what Research IT is and how the team can help your research.
Research IT provide a range of specialised IT services to help you get your research done. They can’t help with issues around email, Wi-Fi, log-ins etc but can help with research data storage, research software (including installation and training), provision of extra computational power and much more. You can also join one of the regular virtual drop-in session to speak directly to a member of the team.

Do you write software?
The Manchester Research Software community is open to all researchers and PGRs who write software (no matter how big or how little!) as part of their research.
The first meeting of the academic year on the Tuesday, 22 October will be a lightning talk session so come along to hear a wide range of topics discussed and to network with colleagues and researchers from across the University.
Research IT training now open!
There is a wide range of training courses for PGRs, researchers and staff available. Upcoming courses include Intro to MATLAB; Intro to Version Control using Git and GitHub; Intro to LaTeX; Data Analysis using R; and much more.

Virtual drop-in help sessions
At Research IT we know how busy you are, and how talking face to face can be the easiest way to communicate a problem or a complex research idea. Join our virtual drop-in sessions and talk to the Research IT experts about anything you need support with – from research software, your own code, research data storage or anything related!
Sessions are held regularly and then next is the Wednesday, 16 October. No appointment required – just join the chatroom at any point during the hour. Free access to GitHub Co-Pilot
Staff and students at the University can now get free access to GitHub Co-Pilot through GitHub Education. If you aren’t sure what it is, how it can help you or what the risks of using it are take a look at this recent article from Research IT.
Get started with the UK Biobank
The first meeting of the new academic year of the University UK Biobank user group takes place on the 16 October. Dr George Foody from the UK Biobank will be demonstrating UKB resources to enable to you to get started with the resource and the Research Analysis Platform. An ideal event for any new PGRs who are using the resource for the first time or researchers who would like a refresher session!

The Teams CaDiR space (Computation and Data in Research) is where you will find special interest and user groups for a variety of areas including the Manchester Research Software community; R and the UK Biobank User group.
