Finding your Manchester research community

Researchers are an integral part of The University of Manchester and we’ve put together some of the key events, networks and opportunities to help you build your community during your time with us.

A welcome message from your Postgraduate Research Officer

Hi there! I’m Rachel (she/her), your newly-elected Postgraduate Research Officer at the University of Manchester Students’ Union. I’m just about to submit my PhD in Religions and Theology – my thesis is on victim-blaming in the Hebrew Bible – so I have a strong sense of what it’s like to do a PhD here, from the application to the completion and just about everything in between. Being a PGR has its ups and downs, and it’s my goal as your Postgraduate Research Officer to make these ups a bit higher and these downs not so low for all current and future PGRs. However, I need to connect with you to do so! Follow me on Instagram, send me an email at pgrofficer.su@manchester.ac.uk or stop me on the street (I feel like I never leave Oxford Road…) – reach out, any time.

Rachel Miller, Postgraduate Research Officer (she/her)

Welcome events

UMPA

The University of Manchester Postgraduate Researchers Association (UMPA) is here to advocate for your experience and to ensure you’re represented across the University.

UMPA is open to all PGRs and you can find out more about the association on the Students’ Union website.

Mature Students Society

The Mature Students Society welcome students of all ages, but you’ll find a community of mature students and postgraduates at The University of Manchester.

Parents, Carers and Guardians Network

The University’s Parents, Carers and Guardians Network is an invaluable source of support and advice for those balancing caregiving responsibilities with university life. Whether you need practical advice, emotional support, or simply a friendly community, the network is here to help.

Join the mailing list and follow the network on Instagram.

We’ve put together an article with support for student parents and carers where you can find out more about the network.

Stay up to date

You can follow The University of Manchester on Bluesky for the latest research news and updates. There’s an active community of Manchester academics and researchers sharing their work and we’d love for you to get involved so that we can share any wins throughout your journey.

Keep an eye on student news to find all the latest news and events including content created by postgraduate researchers. Take a look at Rachel’s PhDiaries series.

And find more student stories and updates throughout the year on Student News.

Wow, something's in the water! Congrats to Christopher 😍
