New to Manchester? Your questions answered

If you’re arriving on campus for the first time this September, we know you may be unsure of what to expect. Here you’ll find the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions you may have.

Frequently asked questions

“When will I receive my timetable?”

You can access your personal timetable using this link when you’ve been invited to complete registration as a student. When information appears on your timetable varies depending on your course and when you complete your course unit enrolment. In the meantime, you may find this page useful, as some programmes use it to publish their timetable information.

“When can I complete my registration?”

You’ll be invited to register as a student between Monday, 1 and Tuesday, 30 September 2024. Invitations to complete this process will be emailed in batches, so don’t be concerned if other students receive their invitation to register before you.

Activate your IT account to make sure you’re prepared when you’re invited to register.

“How can I find part-time work while I’m studying?”

Part-time work is an excellent way to earn money and gain some useful work experience while you study. A part-time job can provide practical experience that will add value to your CV even if it is not related to your degree. The Careers Service offer support throughout your time at Manchester and have information on finding a part-time job as a student here.

“When can I collect my student ID card?”

Once you’ve completed your registration, you’ll receive an email inviting you to collect your student card. During September 2025, student card collection points are based in the Main Library and will be by appointment only.

Please note, you must have completed all ten steps of registration before your student card can be issued.

“How do I log in to my student email? / Do I need a bypass code?”

As part of the IT account activation process, you’ll be prompted to set up 2-factor authentication from Duo. This is an additional layer of security that prompts you to verify your identity when you log in to certain University systems, including Microsoft 365 (for University email) and Blackboard.

In the IT Account Manager (or when you access a protected system for the first time) you’ll need to follow the Duo set-up instructions to register a device to receive this prompt, such as a mobile phone or tablet. As part of the set-up process, you‘ll be asked to download the free Duo Mobile app on to your smartphone. If you don’t have a smartphone, or you have specific needs that aren’t catered for, you’ll be directed to contact the IT Support Centre.

“How can I prepare before I arrive?”

We have an online guide which has been put together by student and specialist staff, featuring podcasts and videos on support available at Manchester.

If you’re wondering how you actually prepare for lectures themselves then have a read of this article, put together by one of our students.

“What extra-curricular opportunities are available at Manchester?”

At the Students’ Union, you have access to over 300 clubs and societies so there is something for everyone. Make sure to visit the Societies Fairs during Welcome week and see which societies are attending on the three different dates.

There will be a special focus on Sport clubs and societies on Thursday, 25 September (10am-4pm, Manchester Academy 1) so make sure to visit then if you’re interested in joining a team.

“How much does Welcome week / ‘freshers week’ cost?”

Welcome week starts on Monday, 22 September and is a series of events and activities hosted by the University and Students’ Union to help you settle into life at Manchester. There’s no set way to spend the week and everyone will have a different experience. You can find the full list of events on The University of Manchester Welcome and Induction webpage, including a variety of free events that are open to all students.

The Freshers Fair is taking place in Academy 1, Manchester Academy, 22nd & 23rd September from 10am – 4pm.

The Socieites Fairs will be the 24th (Academic, Campaigning & Political), 25th (Sport, Culture & Faith) and 26th (Recreation, Arts & Media, Volunteering & Fundraising). Also in Academy 1, 10am – 4pm. Want to plan ahead? Take a sneak peek at our societies here and see which ones catch your interest!

If you’re interested in finding out more about budgeting while studying, make sure to visit the Spend Smart Fair on Thursday, 25 September in the Welcome Marquee (10am-4pm, outside of University Place on Oxford Road).
