The magic of attending University events

Excited. Nervous. These are the two words I would use to describe myself two months ago when I came to Uni as a fresher. New Country. New people. It’s a fresh start.

Naively, I thought the key to success in this new world lay solely in excelling academically. While I still believe it’s important to have a strong academic foundation, I’ve come to realise that the true essence of university life extends beyond lecture halls and libraries. It’s in the events, workshops and activities where magic happens—where you not only grow as a student but also as a person.

One of the most transformative aspects of attending these events has been the friends I’ve made. From chatting with someone at a social events at my accommodation to bonding over shared interests with a classmate, I’ve found these spaces to be where real lasting relationships are built. Meeting my course seniors, for instance, gave me invaluable insights into navigating my studies, while participating in broader university events allowed me to meet peers from diverse academic backgrounds. These connections are where you truly “find your tribe”.

From Curiosity to Confidence: Exploring New Frontiers

I would consider myself a man of many interests. Like many other students, I’m still exploring where my path might lead. From engineering, finance to creative projects, I find myself drawn to diverse opportunities that challenge and inspire me.

I am an engineering student, but attending society led events by MUTIS (The Trading and Investment society) has allowed me to explore finance from different perspectives. These events have broadened my knowledge and helped me connect with others who share my interest in the financial services industry. While I may be studying engineering, I still had access to resources and people who are actively working in the industry. (My very top tip: If you still haven’t, join a society now!)

Just today as I write this, I had the incredible opportunity to meet Leena Gade, a race engineer and an alumna of the University of Manchester through the Formula Student team. It’s rare to meet someone who has not only excelled in such a competitive field but has also broken barriers and set an example for aspiring engineers worldwide.

Before coming to Uni I knew I wanted to  work on a product of my own.i. Fast forward 3 months and three sessions by the Masood Entrepreneurship Centre, and I’m working  on just that with someone studying something completely different  to me me and is in a different year. Who could have predicted that!?

Building Bonds

Beyond the knowledge and skills gained, these events have helped me connect with people who share my passions and ambitions. I’ve met students from my course, my accommodation, and even upper-year mentors who’ve guided me in more ways than one. These interactions have made me feel part of a larger, supportive community.

These moments have helped me build friendships and networks that I know will continue to last long after graduation.

Take the Leap – Change Everything

Attending university events isn’t just about ticking boxes on a CV; it’s about enriching your university experience and shaping your personal and professional journey. It’s where you learn to collaborate, think critically, and adapt. Most importantly, it’s where you realize that university is more than a degree—it’s a platform for discovering who you are and what you want to become. The University web listings are a great place to start exploring just some of the events on offer here.

So my advice? Step out of your comfort zone. Attend that workshop, sign up for that society or join that career fair. You never know who you’ll meet, what you’ll learn or where it might take you.

As for me, these events have already been pivotal in my time here at Manchester. They’ve taught me, challenged me, and most importantly, connected me with people who’ve made this journey unforgettable. The road is long, but it’s enjoyable with friends!
